kalk bay - a good choice?

we have been to cape town twice now staying the first time in the city and this february in camps bay. we feel we have one more trip to this area. having driven through kalk bay in feb 2012 on our way to boulders and cape point we thought it looked very pretty. lots of little 'designer' type shops, cafes etc. however we were put off by the extensive road works and didnt stop!!!! we didnt make it this year either as we only had 3 days before moving on to a safari. we are already thinking about feb 2014 and would like to base ourselves in kalk bay for 3 - 4 days. having done most of the 'must sees' we just want somewhere nice to 'chill out' and enjoy good food and wine before moving on to somewhere else for 3 days (any suggestions?) Would kalk bay fit the bill?

The road works have now moved out of Kalk Bay and traffic is flowing smoothly. It's a great place to visit, with restaurants for every taste and pocket, quirky shops (no Chinese-made 'African' curios or chain stores), one of Cape Town's best bookshops and a fantastic collectable-books shop, a theatre based in an old church, art galleries and potters, markets and delis, and a good selection of guest houses, B&Bs and self-catering accommodation. This all in addition to beach and mountain walks on the village doorsteps, a working fishing harbour that sells fish straight off the boats, tidal pools and some of Cape Town's best beaches in walking distance, historical buildings and architecture, live music at local venues... And then, an easy drive into Cape Town, or access by train, and into the winelands. Probably one of the best places to be based for a holiday.

Well posted Ann! I drove through Kalk Bay on Monday and the traffic flowed smoothly, the roads and parking areas look amazing. The shops and restaurants have all brightened up, ready for Summer. It's a great place for a holiday!

We love Kalk Bay and in particular The Brass Bell, Kalkies and the harbour restaurants. We went several times and caught the train from the Southern Suburbs where we stay so that we could have a drink. We will be going again in January on our next visit.

Thanks everyone for your really helpful and informative comments. The suggestions on where to stay and where to eat are very welcome! Good to hear that the roadworks are finished! We are sure it has all been worthwhile as the little bit we saw that they had completed looked lovely! We are all set for our next trip which will definitely be to kalks bay possibly combined with franschhoek. Just waiting for best prices on flights! Looking forward to returning to SA in Feb 2014!

Hi guys! A final word! We are all booked for February 14! 3 days in kalk bay 3 in Hermanus. We couldn't get any of the hotels we wanted in Franschoek so we are following cathyandmike's suggestion and heading to a gorgeous hotel in Hermanus. Thanks for all your advice. Can't wait for Feb!

Hi please can anyone help with planning a day over a weekend in and around Simons Town/ Kalk Bay in mid October. We will be staying in Somerset West and plan to visit the penguins on Boulders Beach with an 8 year old and wondered what else might be good to do and any suggestions for a really good lunch? Thank you

Hi! We stayed in kalk bay for 3 days. The best meal we had was at harbour house. It's right at the harbour. Food was fantastic and your 8 year old would enjoy watching the seals who swim in the harbour hoping for scraps from the fish catches that come in each morning!
