First time to go to Poconos, what area to stay

Hello,

First time in Poconos and need experts in directing me to best area. We are in our 60s and like scenery, a bit of shopping, close to restaurants, and just a nice area to hang out. Also, need to know the best time of year to visit. AND...what other sights are close to this area? Thanks so much in advance. I know I don't have much info to give you to go on but I am just beginning the search. Thanks again. Mycuppa

Since the PA Destination Experts haven't responded, and there doesn't seem to be an assigned DE specific to the Poconos, I'll give it a shot.

I used to own a timeshare at Lake Harmony and used it as a base to travel throughout the Pococno Region. It's been nearly 20 years since my last visit having moved from the East Coast to Wisconsin in 1994.

I have an upcoming trip scheduled with a timeshare booked near Stroudsburg, an area I used to enjoy visiting back in the 80's. Another area you may want to consider is Jim Thorpe, depending on when you are planning to travel.

As for the best time of the year, I always preferred fall myself, hence the timing for our upcoming trip in October. The fall colors are beautiful and worth considering in terms of scheduling. It's also a bit more laid back after summer with the families and kids on vacation . . . something I've grown to really appreciate as I've gotten older myself.

I have lived in poconos for 30 years just outside Stroudsburg. I hope you are not traveling all the way from Tennessee just to see the Poconos. I am afraid you will be disappointed. Doesn't hold a candle to Tennessee. But if you do come I would recommend Jim Thorpe area.

Thanks, Timeshare Von

I tend to agree with you in not liking the crowding. I like it better after school begins, now that I am a RETIRED teacher.

Thanks again for your input. I had been thinking Jim Thorpe sounded good. CHEERS! Mycuppajava

Thanks, Howard

I am glad you shared. Is there anything around there that would merit coming?

There's a nice casino and hotel at Mount Pocono if you like to gamble. Or even if you don't -- the hotel is lovely, with a spa and some fine dining and entertainment, and there are outlets nearby. Plus hiking and nearby golfing and whitewater rafting.

Fall is definitely a nice time to come, unless you want to do a lot of swimming in lakes and community pools. There are winter resorts as well, but the mild winters of the past couple years make snow activities iffy.
