help - where to stay for winter long weekend?

i have researched and read a lot and am now more confused than before.

Can someone help orient me on areas of the poconos that we should be looking at for the following. please suggest any interesting towns. we love to walk around and explore. no budget in mind:

- we will be going for a long weekend over new year's eve weekend;

-extended family with only one young child;

-nearby skiing, hiking if weather permits;

-other activities nearby?

-restaurants nearby?

very confused. thanks for helping to clarify!

Jim Thorpe would be one to check out.

The closest skiing to Jim Thorpe would probably be Blue Mountain, or Jack Frost/Big Boulder.

A good resource for ski area insider tips is

From the region buttons at the top, click Northeast -> Pennsylvania.

Yes, I have looked at that site but my confusion and questions still stand about good towns to stay in/near to easily take advantage of winter sports.

Not sure if there are any towns of significance that are worth staying near the ski fields in the Poconos - it is more of a small town, rural destination region. There is the town of Stroudsburg near Camelback and Shawnee ski fields, but I don't have any friends with a great desire to use it as a focal point destination. You have the small cities of Scranton or Wilkes-Barre near Montage Mountain ski field and I can't say that either are ideal Winter destinations in their own right. As mentioned previously, Jim Thorpe is the only tourist town of significance near Blue Mountain, Jack Frost/Big Boulder. Carbondale is the closest town to Elk Mountain, but again, can't see any real reason to make it into a focal point destination. If the weather is good, you have a range of State Parks for hiking - Glen Watkins, Hickory Ridge, Tobyhanna, Promised Land etc. You could consider staying at one of the Water Parks - Camelback, Kalahari or Great Wolf Lodge - but I imagine they would be super expensive at that time of the year.

if what you want is an attractive town with interesting shopping and restaurants, then Jim Thorpe is by far your best choice.

Some interesting Band B's in town

Stroudsburg would be a distant second partially because there is l no decent hotel right downtown- although the Hampton Inn is walking distance, and because tne shopping is not good- some decent restaurants on Main Street though

Lake Harmony is my pick. Big Boulder and Jack Frost right down the street (3-5 minutes) and a close drive to Camel Back. Jam packed area with plenty to do, eat, and see.
