Auckland- Paihia, Itinerary advice please

In February next year I am returning to NZ for the first time in nearly 4 years and as part of that trip I'm planning to take my sister away for a surprise birthday trip somewhere. I only have 5-6 days spare and have to be back in Auckland airport at the end of the last day. I wanted something a bit different and special for both of us. Budget is a bit flexible but not unlimted. Comments welcome!

Day 1: Drive from Tauranga to Hibiscus Coast, stay with relatives overnight.

Day 2: Drive to Paihia (how viable is it to go via the West Coast route and visits Tane Mahuta on the way? I know it is a long drive)

Day 3 - 5: Paihia/Russell etc

Day 6: Drive back to Auckland (fly out)

I'm also keen on ideas for unusual places to stay or quirky things to do. I've trawled the forum and the usual tourist sites (and have been to Paihia/Russell/Kerikeri once about 18 years ago!). So I have some ideas in mind of what we will do - we are both fairly active so kayaking, tramping and swimming with dolphis are all possibel so far. If I can afford it maybe even a scenic flight. So more looking for something a bit different along the way.

Thanks all.

Hi there

It is definitely viable and a fantastic days drive to go via the West Coast - Waipoua Forest/Hokianga route.

It is quite windy but well worth it.....

Quirky places to stay... one that springs to mind is Pagoda lodge - http://pagoda.co.nz/accommodation/ in Kerikeri that has several different types of accommodation including safari tents & gypsy caravans...another place that is it bit unusual and really amazing is Takou River Lodge - http://www.takouriver.com/

Northland is also a great place for unusual activities.....

a few that spring to mind are.... evening walk to see kiwis starting from the Trounson Top10 Holiday park, Wairere Boulders park, Ngawha Hot pools, sandboarding at Te Paki stream near Cape Reinga.....

+ 100s of other things.....
