A good end to a NZ holiday?

After 3 weeks of travelling around North and South Island in January we need to end up at Auckland airport. We have 3 nights to use in the Northland area and wondered about the Bay of Islands but didn't perhaps want to spend the time doing another long drive. Can anyone recommend an area or place(s) that would give us some lovely final memories of NZ - perhaps a mix of stunning coastal scenery/waterfalls/beaches/sub tropical forests or things we won't have had chance to see earlier on our trip. We will have a hire car and don't mind doing *some* driving but think it would be nice to have a relaxing end to the holiday - yet we don't want to miss anything really stunning!

The Coromandel is also not to far from Auckland and has some great scenery.

Thanks for all the helpful advice - in the end we didn't try to 'do' the Northlands as it ould have been a quick drive round and no time to relax. If we are ever fortunate enough to return to NZ we will definitely visit this area as a priority. thanks to everyone for your useful advice
