Hello, generally South Africa is not really expensive compared to other destinations. If you plan you can get value for money. It depends on how many people in your group/family as to how much you will spend per day. For example, there are good budget hotels, such as Parliament Hotel, Breakwater Lodge which all offer good clean, value for money accommodation and are well situated.

Fully agree with Lyn and you even have loads of self catering apartments as well. From the Waterfront right through to Camps Bay. And as mentioned, it depends on how big the group/family is and what your requirements would be. For meals you can get away with a good meal between R80 - R120 per person including drinks. Anything from a really good burger to fish and chips or a good steak. High season for accommodation starts in about next month so prices will be a bit more pricey but not as high as mid December to mid January.

Comparing it to other countries: Food and drink is generally cheap. Accommodation is expensive, but nowhere near as expensive as Europe.

Here are some menus from mid-range restaurants, which might help to give you an idea.

We went to Rome, Italy last year & food is much more expensive there. A meal at a mid-range restaurant would cost us at least R500 for two adults & one child. Here in South Africa, we spend about R150 to R200 for all three of us for a main meal & a drink.
