Orient Beach? Grand Case?

So confused on where I should stay on St. Martin!

I love peaceful, beautiful surroundings! Couldn't care less about fine food or night life! Love scenic drives, walks to the beach, snorkeling right off the beach, little day-time beach bars (not a must), We are early 40s... no kids. Like to hike too!

Are you limited to Orient Beach or Grand Case? Certainly other locations meet your requirements....

our home resort at Little Bay is scenic, has good snorkling on site, beach bars, good food on site, lot's of spaces for walkers including the old Ft Amsterdam.see the video...

We stayed on Orient Bay about 8 years ago and LOVED it. We were steps from the beach, there were small shops to grab food/snacks, and LOTS of casual beach bars. We found this side of the island to be much more relaxing and beautiful than the Dutch side where you will find the casinos and large resorts.

We went to Grand Case several nights for dinner .. strip of 5-star restaurants ... never had a bad meal! Nice little shops tucked in among the restaurants.

Thanks! We are not limited to any certain area, but think we'd like the "French" side the best! Thanks for your input!

Not to shu you away from St.Martin as it is my favorite island but based on your post the USVI of St.John would be more to your liking.

I have always liked Orient because their is a lot of daytime beach activity and things quiet down at night but you still have bars/restaurants open for dinner.

There are quite a few restaurants and bars in Orient Village. Safari Grill (French), Ti Chi (Asian), Le Piment (pizza, casual dining), Cote Plage (French),Little Itale (pasta) Across the street is Paris Texas, a Tex/Mex place w/bar, and Tap 5 for pizza and other light meals. Le Cadre serves mostly tapas. Additionally right outside Orient complex on the main road is Rancho Del Sol for dinner and drinks.

In the Orient complex is also Cafe Plantation, and L'Astroble at the Esmeralda resort. They are both very good and more upscale.

Several beach bars have parties at night during high season - Waikiki, Budha Bar at Bikini, Kontiki and Boo Boo Jams, Aloha for lunch. Pedros for BBQ and more..

.There is an ATM located at the gas station in Grand Case on the main road down the hill from the police station as you are coming into town from Marigot and there is also one on the main road to Anse Marcel. Restaurants like tips to be paid in cash even when a credit card is used. It is a good idea to have some USD or Euro handy.

Some nice hotels steps off the beach are:

L'Hoste

Alamanda

Le Grand Bleu (formerly Caraibes Beach Hotel )

We have made 3 trips to St Maarten in the last five years. Last year we tried St. Thomas. We are returning to St. Maaten this December. The first time we stayed on the french side but the last two we stayed in Simpson Bay on the Dutch side. There is just something great about waking up and seeing all the boats in the bay! It is so easy to get around, lots of great and reasonable places to eat and drink! We stayed at the Flamingo and will return. This year we are also staying at LaVista Resort. You can walk to most places to eat , but a car is great to go to the other areas beaches. I read alot of the forum information the first time we went and it was very helpful! You'll have a great time for sure! The French side is great but we found it to be much more expensive and not as "friendly" as the dutch side.

I have to also agree with JMSH. St John is absolutely gorgeous, has everything you are looking for. SXM is my favorite and my objective is not to steer you away from SXM but your likes are pointing right at St. John.

Take note: Grand Case has a lack of decent parking, if you're driving there.

we've found we like the French side of Oyster Pond the best after having stayed on Dutch side and on Orient Beach. Short drive to Phillipsburg or Oreint, traffic in usually not too bad. Large grocers not too far away. Small grocers right in the area. Very senic overlooking the harbor and great to listen to the halyards clanking in the wind in the eveing. Some neat local bars and plenty of restuarants and pizza places.

Can walk down the hill and take the trail down to Baie Lucas for hiking, usually very few people on this beach.

Several nice resorts plus lots of lower cost but nice accomodations.
