Paying with dollars

Just wondering. If you pay for something (dinner, activities, groceries, etc.), do you get your change back in dollars? And do they actually give change back in the form of American coins?

Generally yes, you may see Euro in paper and/or coins on the French side but even so mostly you will see USD, I don;t believe in over 20+ yers of visits i have even seen a florin coin or paper on the Dutch side.

Prices often are shown in both currencies and then converted to USD. In the Grand Marche Sipermarket for exsample you will see prices listed in NAf and USD and converted at exchange of NAf1.80 to the dollar.

Service stations convert at NAf 1.75 to the USD.

The NAf is "fixed" to the USD at 1.788 to the dollar while the Euro will vary day to day.

Some French side restaurants offer1:1for cash transactions.

Thanks for the quick response. And if we pay with a credit card on the Dutch side, do you know if we're charged a foreign transaction fee, if we're paying "in dollars"? And is AMEX generally accepted, or is it usually MC/Visa? Thanks

Visa/MC accepted island wide, Amex is limited, the fee is something you should check with your cc company about as the fee,if any, will vary from card to card.

Note: some places accept only cash .
