I will be travelling to Cambodia on my own and would like to cross the border with Vietnam from Ban Lung to Pleiku. Is this safe for a woman to do alone and how would I do this. I want to keep costs down and not take up huge amounts of time. Also what is the best way to make the 8 or more hour trip from Phnom Penh to Ban Lung?

Minibus going every morning Banlung to Pleikku, takes one hour to the border and another hour border to Pleikku. Safe for everyone,,

Many go by Sorya bus PP-Banlung, but I think minbus is better, it's three hrs shorter. Ask your hotel in PP to book ticket for you.

I am not sure but I think that you will need an Vietnamese visa before you are heading to Ban Lung, as I was told there is no Vietnamese Visa on arrival.

I think all hotels in Ban Lung can arrange the mini-bus for you.

Mini-van from PP to BL might be shorter, but also more crowded, more dangerous and they will pickup & deliver people and cargo .... ergo the trips takes much longer in reality.

I will be in Ban Lung in April and hoping to go through this border to get into Northern Vietnam. What I have researched is not clear. If I have my visa before I arrive, will they let foreignours through?

The price list at my guesthouse in Ban Lung said the bus to the Vietnam border was US$7. Of course all guesthouses can book the trip.

Well, if you are looking for a ticket from Banlung to Pleiku Vietnam ,then Parrot Tours is the place for it but however ,you must arrange your Vietnamese visa in PP or somewhere else before as there is no place to arrange Vietnamese visa in Banlung as well as at the border from Ratanakiri.

Only a couple of weeks ago I took the daily 07:30 am PP Sorya bus from Phnom Penh to Banlung but broke my journey at Kratie/Kracheh and the fare was $7. Sure, the bus was an old Korean bus but the engine was strong and the aircon worked well and we did stop a few times along the way for the usual pick-ups/drop-offs and the total time taken for this 340 km trip was seven hours. The trip to Banlung is some 582 km and obviously takes longer and this is why I like to break my journey at Kracheh which is a lovely quiet town on the Mekong River. Seven hours on a bus is about enough for me these days. The next morning I took an old twelve-seater Ssanyong van with 24 people in it, including three infants, to Banlung having had a good overnight break in Kracheh. I'm back in Kracheh/Kratie on 20th October 2014.

Best regards. Ian

Hey there,

I am very interested in crossing the Cambodian - Vietnam at Ban Lung to Pleiku!

You state earlier that there is no visa on arrival, but if I come from Germany where we

are allowed to enter Vietnam for 14 days without a Visa, do I need to arrange a Visa first still,

or can they stemp this 14 days Visa at the border crossing?

Jakob - you shouldn't have a problem - but this is a pretty remote border crossing, so as long as those on duty at the time are aware that you can be stamped in for the 14 days it won't be a problem. You might want to ask this on the Vietnam TA forum as well.
