SAFE travel from Armenia/Periera to Salento?
Save

A friend of mine was traveling on an evening bus from Armenia to Salento last week. During the trip she was robbed of all her belongings at gunpoint by other "passengers" on the bus. We have heard that robberies en route to Salento are actually fairly common, but the police and tourism industry in the area are keeping quiet about it so their businesses don't suffer. One tour company I contacted completely dismissed my safety inquiry, saying there are zero problems with bus travel, which is obviously not actually the case.

After this story, we are not willing to risk a public bus to Salento. We have heard taxis are just as susceptible, however, so we aren't sure how get around safely. Anyone have insight on the situation from RECENT travel? Best to just skip the coffee region?

I don't know that region but it does happen all over. Travel in the morning- it's much safer. If they plotted bus robberies on a chart by time of day you wouldn't see many at 9 am.

I've travelled that region extensively for many years up to relatively recently and I must say I'm somewhat surprised at this new development. For me the coffee region is one of the most secure in the country at least second nationally after Santander, however, of course we're talking about Latin America at the end of the day and this can happen anywhere.

I'm sure the same can be said for Oakland, California.

I honestly think that your friend was just unlucky and I'm not trying to play it down, nowadays this can happen anywhere in the world with unfortunately more frequency in LatAm. I would still recommend the public bus in the daytime as Rich says.

Do you have a hostel or accommodation booked? Ask them to send you a taxi to pick you up from the airport. I stayed at la Serrana and they sent a taxi and gave a rate. Think it was 80,000cop if I remember correctly
