Yukon aurora viewing in late January

Hello all,

We are going to the Yukon to see the northern light in late Jan./ early Feb. 2014. We plan to go to Whitehorse but we can't decide whether we should follow a local tour or rent a car and drive ourselves. Also, if we follow a tour, should we book it in advance or register one in Whitehorse.

Besides, if the weather is good, do you suggest us to drive to the Dawson city in winter? I heard that the Dawson city has a better view of aurora than Whitehorse.

Thank you.

Winter driving is not the best of times, how comfortable are you with driving in winter-like conditions...

I'm going to assume that being from Taipei you have neither good winter clothing nor winter driving experience - for both those seasons, a tour would probably be best. If those assumptions are wrong, then driving could be a better idea. If you have the 2 extra days that it takes to get to Dawson and back, it could be a better viewing location, not only by virtue of being further north and so more commonly in the aurora belt, but also because it generally has more clear skies than Whitehorse. Driving to Dawson in mid-winter, though, is not for the inexperienced.
