Accommodations in Quebec City with good access for biking

Looking for a nice place to stay in Quebec City but am planning on bringing our bikes. First off, is QC a bike friendly city? And are there areas around the city for nice bike rides? Should we look for a hotel in a certain neighborhood? Thanks.

I did a quick search and found the above link to the Ville de Quebec's biking info page.

The upper part old city certainly doesn't seem very bike friendly with lots of stairs and steep hills. But it seems outside the old city there are many options for you. Use babelfish or google translate if you cannot understand the French. There appears to be no English option.

Basically all the pdf's under this heading - Plan des parcours cyclables - are maps of biking trails. It seems to indicate that there are bike trails in the lower old port area (makes sense to me as I have walked along it there) nice and flat right by the water and with views on the old city. The green stripe are the bike paths.

You can get paper copies of the bike maps at the tourist information offices.

As for hotels I guess ideally you need one where you can store bikes? I would look for one in the lower town as that will put you directly on the trails.

There are gorgeous bike trails in Quebec city. They begin in lower town, you can bike along the St lawrence or towards montmorency falls stop there and go further east if you wish. There is another one going north until valcartier area. You can look at the website la route verte for more info

Stay in a lower town hotel. Like royal dominion hotel or le priori. It is in the old town close to everything and near all bike routes

Many hotels will offer bikes to their customers for free and have secure places to store them.

A partial list of those who lends bikes and surely with a little more work will find some more,

Auberge Place d'Armes

Hotel Champlain

Hotel Dominion

There is also in the farmer's market a store that rent bikes.

Great advice so far. I agree that probably the toughest place to bike would be in Upper Town in the Old City, but outside the gates, and down near the river as suggested is wonderful.

As for places to stay, Whitestone's suggestions are all good, though we do love the Place d'Armes, in Upper Town, a block from the iconic Chateau Frontenac.

Enjoy!!

Bike ride area: do not miss 'Parcours des Anses' on the south shore chaudiereappalaches.com/en/… . The former rail tracks are now converted into a linear park, it follows the river at only a few feet from it - and you get Killer Views of Québec City from it. Access: through the commuter ferry (10 min. crossing time, bikes have priority to disembark). The bike path passes behind the ferry building. Flat and 15 km long.

In the market area of Lower Town all major bicycle routes meet. From there you can easily bike east to Montmorency Falls. You can also follow an old railroad line transformed into a paved bike path going north to the Wendake Indian Reserve (and further) with the very scenic portion of the River St-Charles. You may also follow the bike path along the beautiful Promenade Champlain along the St. Lawrence on the Quebec side.

Another option as mentionned above is to board the ferry to Lévis. There is a bicycle parking area on the ferry. On the other side there is the famous Parcous des Anses. It may be only 15 km long but it connects on both ends with parts of the bicycle Route Verte. I followed that path some years ago to go all the way to the Chaudière Falls on the Chaudière River, crossing the river on a pedestrian/cyclist suspended bridge and returning to Quebec via the old Quebec Bridge over the St. Lawrence and the Promenade Champlain. It is a long ride but very doable in one day.

Try to find a hotel near the market / Bassin Louise / train station area and you will be very close to those bicycle paths.
