Best Part of Montreal to stay

Will be in Montreal for two days and looking for a hotel. What is the best location to book a hotel that is either central or near activities?

Thanks

It depends on your preferences. Montreal's main tourist sites are in a pretty small area, 10 minutes by cab generally. Most people stay in old Montreal, in the summer it will feel more touristy and noisier but you might like the architecture better, it's a bit like our soho. The other choice is the golden square mile, which is part of downtown and has easy access to Mount Royal park (designed by the same person who designed Central Park and is a big hill we call the Mountain) with the best hotel there being the ritz, the first to open in North America in 1913 and totally refurbished in 2013 with toilets that almost wash your butt automatically.

Thank You. Seems like Old Montreal would be of interest to us.

Do we need a rental car or is their mass transit, rapid rail, subway, etc.?

No, don't rent a car. Your feet, métro and bus are all you need, plus the occasional taxi. :)

I think I have to go back to the Ritz just for that rear-end experience Platipus described. LOL!!

For a couple of nights, I agree, stay in old Montreal.

FWIW, we stayed at the foot of Mt. Royal last year and we had no complaints. However, though it was very convenient to mass transit and although there are lots of restaraunts around, we should have stayed in old Montreal for its many charms. The area in what Plattipus described as the Golden Mile is full of office buildings and large international chain stores that you can find in any good sized mall. There are also plenty of nice restaraunts there is that in the old city as well.

All that said, we spent an extremely enjoyable morning hiking up Mt. Royal for a spectacular view of the city.

There is no reason whatever to have car there.
