National parks near montreal?!

Hi there,

We are going on hol to montreal for 2 weeks in August, and would like some advice on the best National parks to visit and things to do, we are hiring a car? We are a couple interested in outdoor pursuits (walking, cycling, kayaking and horseriding) and would particularly like to do some camping!

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Tnx A

Tremblant Park is north of Montreal. There you will find all the nature activities you are looking for, plus in the same region a large resort willed with activities and some beautiful little tons and villages.

Also about 90 minutes from Montreal by car.

SEPAQ has a great website and they cover many parks in Quebec and it also allows you to make online bookings for camping in tents, renting a yurt or cabin in many of the parks. Tremblant park has some great campsites with beaches and canoeing on the doorstep.

hi

Just in case you did not know kind of posting. Canada has a national park system http://www.pc.gc.ca/ which is mostly to preserve eco systems anywhere in Canada; then the Provinces have their own parks which are designed mostly for recreational activities; even though some recreational activities are found in the National parks, they are often limited.

Voyageur Provinical Park is on the Ottawa River close to Montreal. There is horseback riding available in the park. It is actually in Ontario (Ontario Provincial Park) but the closest to Montreal. It is considered a recreational park.

Just to clarify what cbaarch has written about provincial and national parks, both networks offer recreational activities and both have also a mandate to preserve and protect the eco-systems.

The provincial parks in the Province of Québec are called "national parks". They are managed by the Sepaq on behalf of the Quebec government (www.sepaq.com). Parks Canada (federal government) manages the "Canadian" parks system across the country (http://www.pc.gc.ca/) including some in the Province of Quebec such as the Park de la Mauricie.

I believe the Parc national du Mont-Tremblant north of Montreal would be a good choice for hiking, fishing, canoeing and camping (they don't offer horse back riding). Coming from Britain you may be interested in renting a "Ready-to-Camp" tent which comes fully equipped (fridge, stove, heater, pots and pans, etc) with the exception of bedding. You have to bring your sleeping bags.:

While Mont Tremblant is closer, I'd point out that if you're looking for amazing topography of fjords or plunging valleys and such, you have to go a bit further, with the Haute Gorges or the Saguenay parks providing more ooooooh, aaaaaaah than the Laurentians (which are still nice, but tamer).
