Montreal or Vancouver...

Hi all,

We are hoping to go for a vacation to Canada in the 1st week of July.

We live in NewYork and have 2 small kids. Could anybody pls. guide us as to whether we should go to Montreal or Vancouver.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Kavit

Both cities are beautiful. But how can we decide this for you? I think you have to decide this for yourself and then we will help you here with the information you want to know about Montreal. NYC to Montreal in a car would be definitely cheaper than NYC to Montreal by air.

With 2 small children - and it appears you're in NY - you should vacation in Montreal. Vancouver is 3000 miles east of Montreal. There's lots to see and do in the city with European flair.

If you could combine Vancouver and Montreal, you'd have the best city in the world; alas, they're very far apart.

The advantage of Vancouver in the first week of July is that there isn't a huge jazz festival going on (their tiny one ends July 2nd), so you'll have no problem finding hotel rooms. The advantage of Montreal is that there IS a huge jazz festival going on -- it's a really fun time to be in Montréal.

Montréal is a wonderful mixture of european and north american. Everything is in French, but you'll have no problem with getting by in English. It's a sophisticated, fashionable, interesting city that is amazingly unpretentious. It loves food and people watching and having fun, and does it with a flair that is really its own.

Vancouver is stunningly beautiful. The mountains, the ocean, the views! It's enough to take your breath away every time you turn a corner. And to get away from the city is so easy -- just head up to the mountains, and you're in the middle of wilderness. It's very west coast -- laid back, cars stop for you as you cross the street, and everyone is out jogging or rollerblading and being very healthy indeed! But it's smaller than Montréal (2.1 million compared to 3.7 million), and it can feel like a hick-town sometimes!

Can't say which is better. I'd say Montéal's much better if you like cities -- urban, vibrant, interesting, and Old Montréal is so romantic that you'll fall in love all over again. Vancouver still has an urban scene, but it shines more because of its incredible surroundings and lushness.

I hate these questions, its like asking, should I go to LA or NYC, or should I go to Iceland or Hawaii. It really depends what interests you and how much you want to spend.
