Charlottetown in early May 2013 - what to do?

We are taking the first New England/Canada cruise of the season next May. I know it's REALLY early and many things won't yet be open for the season but it's when we could go.

So far, all the tours I've checked don't start until at least the end of May if not later and we will be in Charlottetown all day on Wednesday May 8th. Any suggestions of something I should check into? Tours, museums, rent a car? etc. We particularly enjoy historical and cultural attractions.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Welcome to the PEI forum Zelindar. Yes you certainly are a planner aren't you? lol. Sounds like you did a bit of research already which is great and you are absolutely right. There isn't much going on in May and the tourist season doesn't fully kick off until closer to mid/late June. Regardless there will be things for you to do so don't fret about that.

My suggestion would be to look into a private tour. You don't say how long you are staying. Is it an overnight stop or more likely a day stop? If you are just here for the day, the time it takes to get to a car rental place, fill out the paperwork, find your way around an unfamiliar location, ect will eat too much into your day in my opinion. With a private tour you would be picked up right at the waterfront and could gear your experience to things you want to do that you mentioned. There are several good tour companies that would be more than capable of helping you organize such an experience.

Trius Tours: My favourite tour operator in Prince Edward Island. Have recommended them before and had very positive feedback. http://www.peisland.com/triustours/

Prince Edward Tours: Also probably one of the better tour companies. http://princeedwardtours.com/

Abegweit Tours: My third choice but still capable of providing great tours and might even be a bit more economical. http://www.peisland.com/abegweit/

My recommendation would be to e-mail or phone these providers and compare their pricing. Really they are all great, it just comes down to who has the best price and are flexible enough to do what YOU want to do.

If a private tour is not in your budget you can spend a great day in Charlottetown exploring. Lots of great buildings including Province House(first meeting of provincial leaders that was the basis for Canadian confederation). Not sure if it will be open that time of year but worth taking a peak if you're walking around. Exploring Charlottetown is best on foot because it isn't a huge city and lots of nice homes. Great restaurants to try and Founder's Hall(museum to confederation) is very popular. A walk along our waterfront at Victoria Park also offers great views and there is a little fort with cannons to see. I am only brushing the surface, you might want to consider ordering a PEI tourism handbook for more suggestions. https://www.tourismpei.com/guide/index.php3
