Toronto at Christmas Time?

My family and I are thinking of going to Toronto over Christmas. Is this a good time to visit? Are places generally open?

We have three children ages 20,21,23...What are some things we could do as a family? Shopping would be huge, but what could the guys do? We will have a car so day trips outside the city are an option as well.

Thanks!

The week following Christmas ("Boxing Week") is huge for shopping, it's kind of the Canadian equivalent of Black Friday. Lots of stores will have sales, and the crowds at malls etc will be ridiculous.

Christmas Day itself can be a little sleepy in the city. Not a total shut-down but limited business activity.

Depending when you are here - over Christmas itself, just before or after, there might be a hockey game on. And the Hockey Hall of Fame is always a good visit if you are fans.

So also of course the major museums - ROM, Bata Shoe Museum, etc.

Christmas concerts, etc.

There will be Christmas windows at the major stores, and skating at City Hall or down at Harbourfront.

The St. Lawrence Market is always a great place to visit at that time.

Most of the large hotels will have Christmas dinners, as well The Old Mill which is a family favourite.

Lots of shopping - in the malls and in smaller neighbourhoods - Distillery District, Yorkville, etc. Mall stores will be similar to what you have in the US, although prices tend to be higher, even on sale.

Things actually start to shut down early on the 24th. My British friends were surprised how hard it was to find somewhere for a drink on Christmas Eve. But all of the hotel bars and restaurants will be open.

The downtown is done up pretty nicely for Christmas - big window displays in The Bay (department store). Skating at Nathan Phillips Square is fun that time of year.

Niagara Falls is also nice that time of year with the Festival of Lights - for a day, or overnight trip.

The Distillery District ,which is one of the areas phpr mentions in post #2, holds an annual outdoor Christmas Market for a couple of weeks at that time of year and it's hugely popular with locals and tourists alike.....and don't forget the CN Tower.......

The Christmas Market at the Distillery is cool, but it ends December 15 this year, so probably not on during Anneliese H's visit, depending on when she's arriving...

It would help if we knew what you meant by 'over Christmas'. Will you be coming a few days before Christmas Day and staying for a few days afterwards? Coming after Christmas Day? I ask because Christmas type concerts will mostly be finished before Christmas Day, special Church services etc. Will you need Christmas dinner? Will you be staying over New Year's Day?

Skating at Nathan Phillips Square (in front of city hall).

There are a number of Christmas concerts, Handel's Messiah is an annual tradition.

Also the National Ballet performs the Nutcracker every Christmas season.

What tweed says in post # 5 about the timing of the Christmas Market is correct, but the OP is not specific about her actual dates of travel.....hence the suggestion is essentially with regard to the season.......hopefully she'll help us help her by coming back and letting everyone know exactly what she means so we can give her more specific information..........
