As far as I know (and in this case I don't know much), Markham is known as a bit of a food wasteland for anything other than really great authentic Chinese (not usually quiet or romantic). If you don't get any good suggestions here, I suggest you post your question on the Chowhound board, where you'll find a much higher concentration of foodies from all over the Toronto area:

Don't listen to those Markham slurs; he thinks the world goes flat north of Eglinton...

As it happens Unionville has something like 35 restaurants throughout the little area (yup, E, nosebleed country). There's The Chop House, http://www.chophouse.ca/ (steak house). Along the same stretch of Main Street is Blacksmith Bistro (mediterranean) and Il Postino (italian); all three would probably suffice. Further south is a place called Terra, at Hwy 7 & Yonge, not quite Markham, but still north of Estragon...sorry Eglinton. And yes, up there is Chinatown north; so many places, and many of them excellent, but you would do best with a personal recommendation on those.

While you're up there, take a moment to enjoy the Varley Art Gallery, featuring the work of Frederick Horseman Varely, who was the portrait specialist in the Group of Seven. (Yes, E, there is even culture in them thar condo cornfields...)

Restoran Malayasia is an awesome Malaysian restaurant at located on Majuor Mac at Bayview. Great food and re-decorated about a year ago so very nice inside. The curry's and Malysian noodles are a standout.

If you are back way up north, :) there is a hidden little jewel family run Italian restaurant called Santo's. Its at Royal Orchard and Yonge. We've been many times and have never been disappointed.

I was at Terra recently and found it to be very noisy. Just thinking of other places, how about Octagon? The places in Unionville are good suggestions as well, if you should return.

i agree. there are some excellent high end restaurants in Unionville.

waiters in fine dinning restaurants downtown are usually snobby. people in markham are much friendlier.

That's funny, I've been to many "fine-dining" restaurants in downtown Toronto, and I can't say I've found the servers snobby more than once or twice. If the staff are snobby, it's usually in 2nd-rate restaurants that are trying to pretend they're something they're not.

There are two types of downtown restaurants -- truly high-end customer-oriented places and wannabes. Unfortunately, too many people associate the wannabe high-end restaurants with the truly good restaurants. In general, though, Toronto restaurants are overpriced and overhyped for the type of food and service that is provided.

Dude! Overpriced and overhyped? There are some of those in every city. (Can you say Toqué? And Milos doesn't even list prices on its website.) But generalizing without providing any evidence is unfair.

Downtown Toronto has overpriced and overhyped restos just like every other major city in the world. It also offers some of the most delectable restaurants. Just ask the locals (like me! lol).

As for Markham, I worked there for a few years and had my fair share of shady Asian $5 4-course lunches and the hands down favorite restaurant is the Bluestone Bistro (on Hwy 7, East of Warden), great fair, good value and family owned and operated (aka great service).

Main St. in Unionville is great during the warmer months for people watching on patios sipping on wine or beer.
