Downtown

We are going to Mackinaw Island and plan to stop of in either The Sault Ont. or Mich. from Toronto. Any POV on which side? Is there a good spot on the water?

You have to have a passport to go to the American side, you should keep that in mind..

SSM Ontario is much larger than SSM, MI ... and rather more developed, as memory serves. You can get down to the waterfront and watch ships traverse the canal. Also worth seeing is the Canadian Bushplane Museum.

Not sure what you mean by a spot on the water ... do you mean a hotel/restaurant/camp site/...?

The Delta hotel is on the water, and connected to the boardwalk. Dinner, drinks, movie, clubs, and shopping would all be within walking distance.

You could hit up the Olive Garden an do some shopping if need be on the American side, otherwise I've heard the Canadian side is much nicer...

No Olive Gardens here. But some of the best Italian food anywhere.

The waterfront on the Canadian side is much better than that on the US. There are several hotels on the water or very close to including the Delta (closest); the Sleep Inn, the Travelodge, the Holiday Inn Express & the Quality Inn & Suites. With exception of the Delta, the others are a 5 minute walk between the shopping mall and the roadwhich spans a good chunk of the waterfront.

Food wise, you can probably get a better meal on the Canadian side too. Many options downtown.
