What's to do in the Winter?

Will be in the Soo a couple times during the winter months (daughter going to school there). We like to hike during the snow free months - don't ski or snowshoe - are there any trails that are accessible in the winter? Can we walk on the ski trails at Hiawatha Park? Any other suggestions of winter activities?

There aren't a lot of trails accessible without skis or snowshoes in the winter. The skiers will be none too pleased with you if you walk the ski trails @ Hiawatha. I was skiing and had to take my skis off to walk up a hill & got yelled at by a few ski nazis! And the back country (not groomed) trails would require snowshoes.

You could have a short walk around Bellevue Park...

There's always the Agawa Canyon tour train which still runs as the "snow train" in the winter on weekends. http://www.agawacanyontourtrain.com/

February 5-14 is our Bon Soo carnival. There's an ice sculpture park, polar bear swim, fireworks and lots of other stuff too. I don't think there's much info yet, but the site gets updated closer to the events http://www.bonsoo.on.ca/

February 15-21 is the Shadows of the Mind film festival. Again, site will probably be updated once it gets closer

If you have your passports, you can always head to Sault Michigan for a browse around and also check Kewadin casino to see if they have any concerts or events when you will be here. http://www.kewadin.com

The John Rhodes community center schedules lots of open time to go ice skating. They don't have a website, but here's the phone number

(705) 759-5262

You can also go to a Soo Greyhounds hockey game. Here's this year's schedule http://www.soogreyhounds.com/schedule.php

Fort Creek Conservation area has 160 acres and walking trails thruout. Whitefish Island is small but scenic and has its trails broken thruout the winter.

you can get some nice walks in at ft. creek. lots of folks walk their dogs there and the trails are packed very well. its quite pretty, though if you dont know where you are going it can be confusing. all the trails eventually loop back around to the parking lot again and can take an hour or two to do the whole thing, but it may feel like you are getting lost. i dont know if there are maps or not. also, whitefish island at the locks is quite pretty. fairly a short walk but it is nice.

if you ever wanted to try cross country skiing head out to stokley creek in goulais river for fantastic beautiful skiing. you dont have to know what you are doing and they have good maps and instructions.

we also like to drive up the highway past batchewanna where lake superior opens up. we throw on our snowshoes and walk along the shore. perhaps you could borrow some to try this, it really is beautiful.

Thanks, we're heading back up this weekend. I'll see if I can find Fort Creek and maybe head there.
