3 Days in Ottawa - suggestions please

Hi

We will be spending 3 full days in Ottawa from Monday 2nd-Wednesday 4th.

We would like suggestions on must sees etc. obviously it is very cold at the moment so would like a mixture or indoor/outdoor activities so we can get warmed up every now and again.

We like a variety of things to do. We are outdoorsy but like history, shopping, Christmassy things, sports and a nice church every now and again.

We would be very grateful for suggested itinerary for the 3 days.

Many thanks.

Greetings, you don't say where you are staying? I assume downtown? The weather is supposed to warm up, but that will bring snow :) The canal is not open as an outdoor activity, but you can walk around downtown, it's getting very Christmassy.

History, War Museum, Parliament Buildings, Museum of Civilization, Aviation Museum etc,

Shopping, Byward Market (also eating and drinking), Rideau Centre, Sparks St.

Notre Dame (double spire) next to the Art Gallery and several more, Knox , St Patrick etc

Everything above is located downtown and walkable, except the Aviation Museum (east end) and the Museum of Civilization (Gatineau aka Hull).

That's also an idea, walk over the bridge and enjoy a little French culture in Gatineau (Hull) Quebec.

For an itinerary, just pick the places you would like to visit and do say one a day and leave the restof your time for shopping, meals and just taking in the sights.

Thank you, we're staying at Arc the Hotel so hopefully everything is within walking distance. I read about a free tour at parliament hill is that still running?

Many thanks

The Arc hotel is very centrally located. A few minutes north is Sparks St and then The Parliament Buildings.

East a few blocks is the Byward Market and the Rideau Centre shopping Mall. On your way to the Byward Market you pause to have a look at Canada's National War Memorial (Cenotaph).

Enjoy

hi

a suggested walking tour http://goo.gl/maps/rM1dy

from your hotel walk on O'Connor towards Wellington, take the entrance on the left side of the parliament buildings. Before you proceed to the front entrance (Peace Tower) continue on the left side towards the back of the building - there is a view point that is worth it. Look for the family of cats. At this viewpoint you get a close look of the outside of the parliament library which has recently been renovated. then come back to the front if you are going on the tour inside. When you come out of the parliament grounds cross the street and walk by the war memorial up close. Then cross over again heading towards the Fairmont Chateau Laurier hotel.

If it is cold you can go in the front door to warm up as you walk towards the reception desk where you need to turn right to exit on MacKenzie Ave. On MacKenzie Ave turn left towards the US Embassy. to make your way to the Byward Market area.

If the weather is nice then take the path on the parliament side of the hotel to see the locks and walk to the Majors Hill park. In the park look for the stairs that take you down (besides US Embassy). You are now in the Byward Market area. There are enough shops/malls in the area if you need to warm up. Have lunch in one of the many restaurants in the area. If you still have time to explore that day you could make your way to the National Art Gallery or leave it for day 2 since the Mint is in the same area as the gallery.

If you want another museum, suggestion is the museum of civilization in Gatineau (Hull Quebec) . recommend taking the bus for that one.

if you zoom in on the map you should get 3D of the buildings.

<< Look for the family of cats>>

But you won`t find; the cat sanctuary was closed back in January.

Well just to tell you that the Museum of Civilization is in Gatineau in the Province of Québec so you should check that Province and city pages to get an idea of what awaits you. It is easy to walk from the National Gallery or the Byward Market across the river although it can gets biningly cold.

Museum of War is a bit far off from Parliament Hill so a long and cold walk in winter. Notice that you can get combo tickets for Museum of Civilization and Museum of War.

If you have a car then you could drive all the way to Gatineau Park.
