Ottawa Neighbourhoods for Strolling, Shopping, etc.

I have visited Ottawa a number of times, but really don't know the city outside the downtown core/Byward Market district. I'm interested in learning more about some of the neighbourhoods - other districts where one could stroll, shop in some unique stores, stop in a cafe, lunch in a nice restaurant, etc.

There are a few nice restaurants and bars along Laval Street in downtown Hull (e.g. Restaurant Gy, Pizaza, Le Troquet), and some little shops along Promenade du Portage (although nothing super unique). And the best brewpub in town, BDT on Rue Montcalm. I'd say it's more of a restaurant/bar district than a strolling district though, because there's not much other than restaurants.

You just dont have the same vibe on Portage than in Ottawa. Old Hull is trying to get better.

As all the activities are mostly around public servants durring the week, the week-end it can feel a bit deserted.

If thats your thing, a very nice new place on Portage is Brut Cantina Sociale, wine bar, tapa, good food. This concept is quite new on that side of the river, it is refreshing!

If the weather is nice, you can actually walk from ByWard to Old Hull via the Alexandra Bridge (if its cold and windy, its gonna be atrocious cold and windy walking the bridge!!!)
