Ottawa - Ontario - Niagara Falls - Ottawa

I will be at the above places between 19 - 21 Nov 2012. We intend to drive around these places for site seeing. Any advice for 1st timers. Basically I know I will spend the 1st nite in Ottawa, then one nite at Niagara Falls, and spend the next day touring the Thousand Islands. Any recommendation on the route to take or what's along the way or any special local flavours that we should try.

In case you have not yet checked a map, you will be covering a fair amount distance, and may not have too much time for sight seeing.

It is roughly 6.5 hours, 580km, from ottawa to niagara falls, then you will be doubling back from niagara falls to thousand islands another drive of about 4.5 hours, 380 km.

Unless your point of arrival and departure is Ottawa, it may make more sense to go Ottawa, thousand islands, then Niagara falls.^

Post #1 is correct..........Ottawa and Niagara Falls are not at all close to each other, and driving between the 2 cities will use up a big portion of your overall vacation time.............I can't tell from your post if you've ever been to Toronto..............it' a stop in between to consider, although you're certainly limited timewise............are the 1,000 Islands a must do ?

Welcome to TripAdvisor, Joanna;

Respectfully, the 1000 Islands is a water based, summer destination. I would not suggest visiting in mid-November.

There is not much point going to the Thousand Islands in November - the boat cruises are finished for the season and you'd only be able to see the islands from land. The main town Gananoque is quite sleepy in the winter months, with most tourist attractions closed for the season.

Additionally at this time of year the weather is relatively unstable - rain, sleet, snow are all possibilities. If you have never driven in these types of conditions, it is unadvisable to begin now.Last weekend I drove through this area and experienced all of the above. Not a problem for me but if you are unfamiliar with these conditions it can be difficult.

I think you clearly underestimate the distances and amount of time involved in travelling in Canada.

November 19-21? You've only got three days.

How are you arriving and departing? If you're flying into _and_ out of Ottawa, you should spend all three days there. Niagara is too far to get there and back in the limited time you have, and any early winter weather would really foul up your plans.

If you're arriving in Ottawa but leaving from somewhere else (flying out of Toronto, driving on to Buffalo, etc.), then spend a day and a half in Ottawa before making your way to Niagara.

1000 islands is not worth going right now, unless you really want to see theit tiny Casino and I would stay in Hull for their much better Casino....
