Weekend Trip... what to do?

We're planning a weekend visit and are staying at the Westin.

We were wondering what we could do while there... easy things that are highly recomended.

We'll definitely do all the Parliament stuff... what about the best museum or two? Would it be the Civilization one or the war, aviation...?

Anything else, we'll arrive Friday evening and maybe just have dinner at the Westin (prices?) and a dip in their pool. All day Saturday visit attractions and leave Sunday in the late afternoon.

In terms of what to do, it all depends on what you like to do?

Your hotel is centrally located in the Market area. This is a nice place to visit, any time of the day - a variety of shops and vendors, buskers all about, - you can easily spend half the day here. The National Art Gallery is also in this area and is currently hosting an Italian Renaissance Exhibit, in additional to the thousands of other pieces of art. It's a lovely gallery.

Accross the way from here is the Museum of Civilization, one of our favorites. It also has a nice little courtyard area overlooking the river that is buffet style, but a nice place to have lunch outside.

You might also want to take a boat cruise on the canal - you can likely arrange this with your hotel concierge - it is nice, and they have a dinner cruise as well - however we have not done this one so I cannot recommend it.

Parliament hill as you mentioned is nice to see, especially if they have the changing of the guard when you're there - I believe this occurs in the morning, and only on certain days.

YOur hotel is very centrally located to all of the above, so you can essentially walk everywhere.

Our favorite places to eat are Domus, and Meditheo in the market. The restaurant in the westin is rather expensive, and in my opinion highly overrated. There are too many little neat places in the market, and you can just walk there that I would just go there. Most of the restaraunts post their menus outside, so you can peruse their menu and decide if they are serving whatever it is you're in the mood for.

Also, if you are cyclists, biking along the bike paths (directly in front of your hotel) is a wonderful way to experience the city. I am not quite sure how you go about renting, but again if you call your concierge I am sure he/she can make the necessary arrangements for you/ provide you with the needed info

Hope this helps. Have a great visit!

The war museum is new of only a couple of months and worth a look just for the architecture. The Civilization Museum is also very nice. At night head to the Byward Market for dinner at an outdoor cafe and then the Casino across the river in Gatineau. When visiting Parliament, important to remember that the Changing of the Guard is at 10am and last half an hour (get there at least 15-20 minutes for a good view. But get your tickets for a free tour before the changing of the guard starts for a later tour (or do the tour first thing in the morning). Don't forget the view from the top of the Peace Tower is very nice.

Have a good time.
