No reservation hotel deals

Can you get a good deal on a hotel room if you don't have a reservation, and just ask if there are any available rooms for the night? I know some people cancel or sometimes not all the rooms are booked (depending on what time of the year you go). has anyone ever tried that or does anyone have any insight on that?

If you can get those "hotel coupon" books you might be able to save money. But I normally get a better rate booking ahead.

It would all depend on whey you are going. And do you want to spend part of your vacation tring to get a hotel room.

One time comeing back from Disney, my parents had not booked a room and did not realize it was Jul 4th weekend, we spend hours trying to find a room, we ended up sleeping in the car. Not fun especially as we still had a full day of driving the next day.

My experience is that walking up to the hotel desk does not get you the best deal. At that point many hotels assume you're desperate and are unlikely to walk out. I do better if I reserve ahead through the hotel's website or reservation line, even if it's only 2 or 3 hours before I show up.

The best deals I have gotten in Niagara are direct from being on the hotel's email list and have been last minute but not day of last minute. For example at this time of the year I often get an email from the Embassy or Marriott on Wednesday or Thursday with super deals for the upcoming weekend. Earlier this month I paid $115 for a Fallsview room with breakfast, $25 Casino voucher, bus passes, and $40 dinner voucher for a Saturday night stay - that deal came over email on Thursday. Sometimes deals for the next month for during the week (Sun-Thurs) stays come the prior month. I have read about the new last minute apps that can get you great deals in cities and have looked for them for Niagara (although not within the last couple months) and I haven't found any yet. I agree with other posters that just walking in might not be the best way to get a great deal but I have never tried it.

As mentioned, when you walk up and ask for a room the hotel will almost never give a deal as they know you are in need with few options. Maybe in the dead of winter you can get a regular rate, but I'd think anytime during the spring, summer or early fall you'll get a very high rate.
