Planning a trip to Niagara Falls in May

My husband & I are also considering celebrating our 35th anniversary in Niagara in May. We enjoy outdoor activities (no golf), enjoy wine & good food. We were planning to spend a week there. Another post suggested that a week in Niagara may be too long. Here is my tentative itinerary:

Day 1 - visit the falls - take a boat ride or walk under the falls,

Day 2- visit the bird kingdom and walk a nature trail

Day 3- Picnic at Queen Victoria Park and go shopping in Niagara

Day 4 - Visit the Botanical gardens & the butterfly sanctuary

Day 5- Explore Niagara-on-the-Lake

Day 6 - spend the day visiting vineyards

Day 7 - travel day

Does this schedule seem that we won't have enough to do? Any recommendations for B & Bs or restaurants? Any other suggestions given our interests?

Thank you for your comments.

We all travel differently .... do you sleep in every morning, do you like lots of down time, long lunches....for me I could do the first day of your itin in a half day; day 2 & 4 would be one for me, and I'd have a hard time spending even half a day shopping. NOTL is lovely but including a long lunch it's not a full day.

However if you like to get a late start and sit on benches in parks, having wine or coffee on a patio etc. then you could make this work for you. Nothing wrong with lots of R&R if that's your travel style. If you have a car you could take a day to do a day trip to any of the conservation areas (falls) in the Hamilton area. The wineries tend to be "stores" selling their wines and tastings which might a challenge if you are driving - have a look at several and see which will provide more of a tour.

I think visiting wineries would make a nice day for #6, and if you're driving, you can mix a cheese maker, produce market and/or ice creamery in with the wineries to lower the overall alcohol content of the day. If you're interested in winery tours Pillitteri, it has free tours and a quirky history reflected in its design features (also pretty good wine).

Otherwise I agree with travelfun001, you could easily condense the other activities into fewer days if you wanted to.

You forgot the Clifton hill wax museum and sky wheel day:) my favorite 2 things to do after a brief glance at the falls. Jk sort of...I have been there at least 20 times and just can't get enough of the vintage touristy attractions like Louis toussauds.

OP, if your interested in staying I a B&B, Niagara-on-the-lake has the best B&Bs. If you want to enjoy the falls, I would suggest a hotel with a falls view.

I don't think a week in Niagara is too long if it's your first trip!!! HOWEVER, A lot of things I like to do(like my post about Clifton hill) requires a lot of only though....the skylon tower, the IMAX theatre, the romantic R5 bar at the casino, the cable car over the rapids, journey behind the falls, etc. I could easily spend a week and them spend 5 grand on parking and all the activities. And that doesn't include Niagara on the lakes. We did a winter wine tasting there and got about 5 thimbles of wine for $100.......

I guess it's all a matter of what you like and how much you can spend. A 2 night trip to Niagara Falls for me from Ohio costs as much as a week trip to cancun when is all said and done. But I love Niagara and will continue to go both there and cancun:)

No-one has indicated if early/mid May would be too early to take a trip here. Without expecting high summer weather, would it likely to be reasonable weather then? If we are there before the Maid of the Mist trips start, would we be missing out? Coming from Boston, would we be best to stay in Buffalo or Niagara or NOTL? Try g to build Niagara into a tour of New England but the guide books don't give all the answers!

Lpm48, it seems like you have some specific questions that are quite different from the OP's, so please start a new thread in the Niagara forum rather than tack them onto this one. Threads get confused when they contain more than one conversation.

I would add the White Water Walk, and the floral showcase, maybe a walk over rainbow bridge.
