Hornblower sues to stop MOTM

Thought it be interesting and it is, lol. Too bad length of time running the boats can't matter. Sometimes that should matter more then who pays the most money. What a mess this has become.

Thinking about this a little more.

Hornblower knew when they signed the Canadian agreement they did not have any agreement with the US side. They gambled and lost. No where to build a US dock..were there is a will there is a way. They should had bought out MOTM..expect for some money isn't everything, maybe they refused to sell ?

MOTM has been around "forever", surely older then any person alive today. Not sure which has been around longer, the US state park or MOTM--haven't both been around since the mid 1800's ? The year 1846 I recall for one of them ??

Somethings should never change, IMO

Hornblower likely did not want to negotiate with NY or MOTM , now they want their lawyers to run them out of town. Greed ruins so much in this world.

Sadly most folks will not follow what happens and whoever is up and running come 2014, people will flock to them. True, MOTM has the name people remember so Hornblower wants them gone, plus there be no competition to hold down prices.

Can Obama do something, lol

This all has to do with New York State 'giving' MOTM the long term contract without putting it out to tender. Hornblower didn't get the opportunity to negotiate or bid because the State didn't follow their own law.

The MOTM has always contended that because the docking facilities were on the Canadian side, whoever had the Canadian contract had to also have the U.S. contract because there could not be any docking on the U.S. side. Now that they have lost the Canadian contract, they suddenly can build docks on the U.S. side and are arguing against the very position that they took for 50 years.

Hornblower is now suing the State of New York to open the bidding of the contract to everyone.

The link to the first article above states that MOTM has 3 decades left in a 4 decade contract with the state. So, the state was contractually obligated to MOTM for the next 30 years already. Not sure of the law but perhaps because it was a renegotiated contract, the state was not obligated to open up bidding?

Don't know much about the details but it seems to me that Glynn of MOTM and MacRae of Hornblowers are both the typical dregs of the American political system. Now they are just in a political and legal battle to determine who is more powerful.

The only reason I come down on the side of Glynn and the Maid of the Mist is for tradition sake. As stillsmoking pointed out, MOTM has been around since the 1800's and that should count for something. It would be a shame to no longer have the Maid cruising under the Falls.

Hmmm, well maybe they are both "fat cats" just trying to throw their weight around ?

The current owners of MOTM bought the company in the 1980's I believe. To me, that is the way to go about it, not come in and try to squeeze a longtime player out.

Hornblower is to be getting nicer boats and they do have deeper pockets yet how fancy of a boat do you really need ? To me, those old paddle boats from 100 years ago might have been neat to sail on. You just ride a little ways out and go on back to the dock. MOTM has a great safety record, too bad money talks very loudly today.

But they got that exclusive contract on the basis that whoever had the Canadian contract had to have the U.S. one. With the new arrangement, State law mandates that it has to be put to tender. Traditon is fine, but if the people of New York State are being shortchanged by tens of millions of dollars, seems like a no brainer to me.
