The H1B is strictly for the U.S. and will not allow you entry into Canada. You must obtain a Canadian Visitor Visa to enter.

Hi!

Just piggy-backing on this post, I am british and will be travelling to Buffalo and then staying in Canada. I know we'll get into Canada ok, but what about getting back into the US? We'll be using the VWP.

Thanks!

That is no problem, heather, the VWP allows side trips into Canada. Just keep your passport, and any other paperwork you received when entreing the U.S., with you when crossing the border.

hello!

i'm planning to visit niagara falls on a december weekend. I have a Philippine passport working in the US with a blanket petition. Would I still need a visa for those 3 days? Thank you.

The specific answer for rhia15: unless you have a US I-551 green card -- and it sounds like you don't, but are instead in the US on an L-1 visa -- as a citizen of the Philippines you need a visa to visit Canada.

The general answer to this question:

Citizens of certain countries (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp) require a visa to visit Canada, even if it's just a short side-trip from the US.

Having a US visa (H-1, L-1, etc.) does not exempt you from Canadian visa requirements; it's only US lawful permanent residents who can use their I-551 "green card" to enter Canada without a visa.

rhia,

there is basically nothing to do in Niagara Falls, NY during the winter, other than seeing the Falls from that side and visiting Seneca Casino.

Yeah, TD, we do get these questions a fair bit. The government sites tend to make it hard to find the answers quickly, many other sites have incomplete or misleading info, and "call the embassy" is a cop-out because most embassies won't answer these questions by phone. No wonder people are confused.
