Niagra Falls or Niagra on the Lake

Having spent hours on the Trip Advisor website I can't decide where to stay.

Was considering staying in Niagra on the Lake on Saturday and Niagra - one of the Falls view hotels - on Sunday so we could watch the fireworks. Hotels in NOTL seem quite expensive.

What is the distance between the 2 places? How much would a taxi cost ?

Would it be better to stay in one place for 2 nights and travel to the other. If yes which place should we choose. Not interested in Casinos - like nice food and craic.

Was told by someone who stayed in Niagra last year that it was a bit tacky apart from the falls

Would love some local advice.

Many thanks

NOTL is very expensive,it's quaint and full of history.Good food and the view is great.Alot more to do and see in the Falls though. Many more choices for food.Tacky is a word for the Clifton hill part of the Falls. There is alot more to the town though. You could try a Bed & breakfast somewhere in between.Even if you dont gamble, the Fallsveiw casino has great entertainment and a nice buffet.I myself would want to stay where the action is....that would be Niagara Falls. It is a twenty min drive to NOTL.I believe there are shuttles.

Travel by bicycle! Best way to enjoy the whole area and save money.

Step 1. Book a one night stay at a B&B on Saturday in Niagara-on-the-Lake and a one night stay on Sunday in Niagara Falls.

Step 2. Arrive in Niagara Falls on Saturday morning with your own bicycles or if travelling by air/train/bus, rent bicycles from Niagara Bicycles and Outfitters (905) 358-7286. If you rent bicycles, you can store your luggage free at bike rental shop.

Step 3. On Staurday morning, pack an overnight kit in a backpack and cycle the 23 kilometers from the Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-lake. If you follow the Bicycle Path along the Niagara River, you will see most of the Natural and Man Made attractions that the Niagara Falls area has to offer. The whole trip can be made in a few hours.

Step 4. Check into your B&B in N-O-T-L. You can then tour/cycle throughout the whole town at your leisure.

Step 5. On Sunday morning, cycle back from N-O-T-L to Niagara Falls via Concession 1 to Queenston. This route takes you along a back road past many of Niagara's Wineries. Take a Winery tour along the way!

You've now arrived back in Niagara Falls mid day on Sunday and can enjoy all the "Falls" has to offer. You will also find it easier to tour the city of Niagara Falls by bike rather than using public transit or taxis.

Alternately, if you do not wish to cycle back from N-O-T-L on Sunday morning, you can call Niagara Taxi or 5-0 Taxi to pick you and bicycles up with a van in N-O-T-L for the return trip to Niagata Falls. I believe they charge $25.

Enjoy!

If it were for a romantic stay for two, I'd choose Niagara on the Lake. But it seems you have a teenager with you...? so I'd suggest staying both nights in the Falls. More to do, more choice of restaurants, shopping etc.

It would be a shame not to spend some time seeing NOTL and maybe doing a winery tour, but with only 2 days you'll likely have enough to keep you occupied in the Falls.

If you do decide to stay in NOTL, the White Oaks Conference Resort or a B&B would be more reasonable, but you would really need a car to tour around.
