The weather in early May is rather unpredictable, so be prepared for warmish, or cool temps, possibly some rain, and you won't need a car in downtown Toronto, it will be easier to take the TTC, which is the public transit system here.....................

Indoor activities could include some of our excellent museums and art galleries......suggest the ROM - Royal Ontario Museum and AGO=Art Gallery of Ontario...............

Where will you be located in Toronto?

What do you like to do - what interests you - museums, shopping, theatre, history...? Go to the Toronto forum and read the Things to do link, and Top Questions about Toronto.

Hi Linda;

Toronto is Canada’s largest city, 4th largest in Canada & the US after New York, Los Angeles & Chicago. You could spend an entire week in Toronto and still have plenty to see and do.

About 165 miles / 265 km, a 3 hour drive east of Toronto and about ½ way to Montreal, are the towns of Kingston and Gananoque.

In the town of Kingston, you won't want to miss Fort Henry, which has been designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization. (UNESCO)

The original Fort Henry was built during the War of 1812, between Canada and the United States.

Just 18 miles / 28 km east of Kingston is Gananoque (pronounced GAN-AN-OCK-WAY), the "Gateway to the Thousand Islands". You can take a 1 hr, 2.5 hr, or 5 hr boat tour of the 1000 Islands.

The 5 hour tour stops at Boldt Castle, which was built in 1900 by the former owner of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. If you wish to walk about the island and tour through the castle, you will need to clear U.S. Customs, as the island is in American waters. Be sure that you bring your identification as required.

While in Gananoque, check out;

The Thousand Islands Playhouse for great live theatre.

If you decide to stay in Gananoque overnight, I strongly recommend the Islandview Inn Bed & Breakfast, which is located only 1 block from where the tour boats dock, and the St Lawrence River.

The Holiday Inn Express would be my second choice, but is located at the opposite end of town.

I saw this on the news yesterday as well. Toronto proper now has a couple of hundred thousand more people than Chicago proper. However the greater Chicago area has about 1.5 million more people than the GTA.

Toronto is now 4th largest in North America after Mexico City, New York and L.A.. Then Toronto and Chicago.

Personally, I find those rankings are meaningless, unless you're specifically comparing municipal governments. If Toronto annexed York Region, it would suddenly bypass Los Angeles for #3. Or, if Scarborough "separated" from the city, Toronto would drop in the rankings. Neither change would affect a visitor's experience of the city.

If we must compare, the urban areas in North America (…wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_largest_urba…) is probably much better reflects how the city "feels" to visitors -- and as Krustytripper notes the GTA has a long way to go to catch Chicagoland on that one.

Either way, Linda shouldn't run out of things to see and do. The Museums & Attractions (tripadvisor.ca/Travel-g155019-s410/Toronto:O…) and Neighbourhoods (tripadvisor.com/Travel-g155019-s204/Toronto:…) articles have good ideas about where to spend your time, depending on your interests.
