Pay 50% more than expected or higher

Today is Monday August 20, 2012

So far, the wife and I have over-paid at every stop and every turn.

We came through Sackville, turned toward PEI, took the ferry to Nova Scotia and decided to hit the Atlantica Hotel. We wanted downtown but ended up booked into Chester (Western Shores). Priceline quoted $303 and we got billed at $404 on my credite card. Surprise when I dispute everything but WHAT a PAIN in the Butt! My advice -- drive to Nova Scotia -- tour it -- but go back to New Brunswick -- or home. Every booking agent in the reservation deparment for every hotel qualifies you (er, profiles you) "and what may I ask is the reason for your stay?" Go ahead - answer vacation, put that STUPID WALLET to FLEECE on your forehead. We have money - don't get me wrong - but I hate being ripped off -- I prefer when I dole it out on my own. After all - I earned it so I get to choose. However, keep both hands on everything that looks like money.........

It sounds as though you are having a miserable time. But honestly, I'm not sure what you are talking about. It looks as though you are trying to use a combination of Priceline and/or hotel reservation departments to find hotels, and at the last minute. These are definitely not the best methods for finding a satisfactory hotel. This is your first post on TA. I am so sorry you didn't come on before your trip to get the best advice for your travel plans. When things are done at the last minutes, prices are generally at their highest. Your vacation could be so much better.

Not to worry, I use these travel junkets to explore and also I feed info to Jonnie Casino and help rate Casinos. The take it as it is approach provides some insights the 'planned' traveler doesn't run in to so much. The Priceline quote (which is really great in my book) was much better than when I called the hotel directly. I'll head downtown Wednesday and we'll see how that goes. Robie street definitely has a lot to offer but the hurdle will be how fair the pricing is when I call. Every call has reaped the same question, "may I ask why you are staying?" which, when you think about it, is an intrusive question, to filter the naive traveler. A good price is a good price and when I finally blog, it won't be pretty.

I think you have to come up with a counter question there. Such as "How will my answer make a difference to the kind of reservation you will give me?"

A good approach indeed. But my interest isn't in the kind of reservation it's in the warning and alerting to a wide audience to avoid this place or to adapt expectation to fleecing.

I am still confused as to what exactly you are complaining about.

did you stay at the Atlantica?

Why was the bill more than you expected in Chester? Where did you stay? How did you book it?

I assume you are aware by now of our 15% tax on most things. That is the cost of government, including health care in a small place.

Cant say in my travels around Nova Scotia that i've ended up being billed for more than I should have, be in hotels, motels, B&B or restaurants.

Ya, I'm a bit confused. Your original post is confusing.

Who did you book through? If it was the hotel, then your issue is with the hotel and can be easily rectified when you show your confirmation. If you didn't get a confirmation, then I can't blame the hotel. If you booked your reservation through a third party like Priceline or Expedia, your beef is with them. These rooms are sold by the third party and have very little to do with the hotel. If you checked on Priceline and then called the hotel and they wouldn't match the rate, then your choice is not to stay.

Saying that all hotels in NS rip people off is a little off base.

By the way, the question of "What brings you to the area?" is a question that allows the agent to qualify you for a rate. If you say that you are coming to visit the town for two nights they may have a special for two nights that they can offer you. Also, you may be travelling on Business and the business you work for has a special rate with them. It is not a question to find out how much money you have in your pocket. It is a question to find out how to best serve you. Hotels that don't use this question are doing themselves and their guests an injustice. If you don't want to answer the question, then don't, but I guarantee you that you will be quoted rack rate.

I'd love to know what happened to you exactly and maybe the collective knowledge here on this site can help you.

I'm confused also ??

I've used priceline and it's very risky in unknown territory unless you do " your zones " homework but what has never happened is the amount on the confirmation changing unless it specifies taxes and fees to be paid directly to the hotel !

Look forward to more information on your dilema,

I noticed an Ad for Atlantica Chester, part of the confusion is they have bought what used to be called Oak Island Inn and Marina so now Atlantica ( not Holiday inn on Robie) Inn and Marina.

So could it be youre taking out what you got from Priceline , namely an expected hotel downtown becoming a hotel in Chester, on all the good hotels in Nova Scotia?
