8 days to tour

My husband, I and 10 year old twins will be driving to Cape Breton Island in mid-August. Last year we rented a house on PEI and took day trips around the island, taking in the breathtaking scenery and at night the fabulous music. Both daughters play the fiddle so we are interested in the music and culture of Cape Breton as well as hiking and general siteseeing. We are traveling with a pop up camper and would appreciate camp ground tips, restaurants, highlights and possible itineraries. We plan to stay about 8 days with three days travel on each end to and from the Boston area. We want to see and experience as much of the island both coast and inland as possilbe. How many days/nights should we plan to to leisurely go around the island and where do you suggest staying along the way. We do have the doer and dreamers guide but would appreciate insider tips. Thank you in advance

Hello there,

For some great campgrounds I would choose from Ingonish Campground, Englishtown Ridge, or Baddeck Cabot Trail Campground. These are all centrally located for main attractions and museums. Easy day trips may include Louisbourg and Sydney. If you stay at one of those places and decide to do a day trip, stop along the way and have a bite to eat at Best Western/Noth Star Inn in North Sydney and enjoy their great buffets. Make sure you and your family enjoy a Bird Island Tour and Whale Watch Tour. If you travel to Sydney be sure to take the girls to the Government Wharf to show them the largest illuminated musical fiddle. It stands something like 55 feet. Inside the pavillion there you can go in the little lighthouse and see how this fiddle was made and transported here. If you look on page 8 and 248 of your 2006 Doers and Dreamers Book you will see pictures of it. Be sure to get your picture taken with it as well. If you happen to be there on a day that there is a cruise ship visiting they hold a huge arts and craft exhibit there and you can get some great fiddle memorbilla of your visit. Also there is a stage there for your daughters to pull out their fiddles and play for a mini inside concert for visitors like yourself. If you are hungry in Sydney try the Meridian Hotel just minutes before you get to the wharf and across the street is a water fountain park that your girls can splash around on. Not in the park water, thats only for the ducks but on ground level water fountain. Good Luck planning.
