Baddeck - Touristy?

Baddeck - Touristy?

We are planning ahead for an August 2008 trip to PEI & Nova Scotia(9 of us - grandparents, parents & kids). We are considering staying in Baddeck 2-3 nights but I have read in some posts that it is "touristy." Does that imply large crowds & heavy traffic? (Coming from So. California we are trying to get away from that!) Also, since there are so many of us we don't want to be driving a lot (we'll have 2 cars) & moving from place to place. Is Baddeck a good base for day trips? We like kayaking, light hiking, swimming & beautiful scenery, and the Bell Museum looks like it would be interesting for all of us. The kids will be ages 10-13. Any other suggestions? Appreciate any help.

Heavy traffic does not apply to Cape Breton at all. Baddeck is a great central location for hiking and swimming etc. Baddeck is a very small town and has one main street with restaurants, museums, waterfront, accommodations and crafty stores. A Bird Island tour and a whale watch excursion could be on your to do list for everyone as well. www.visitbaddeck.com.

Thank you proudcaper! I liked the whale watching suggestion. I checked out Cabot Trail Whale Watching (in Pleasant Bay) & it looked great although I didn't see any kids in their photos. I'll have to check with them as to age requirements. If anyone out there has gone whale watching I'd appreciate any feedback. How long would it take to get to Pleasant Bay from Baddeck? And is the Cabot Trail a difficult drive? One tour book I looked at compared it to a "roller coaster." Thanks again for your help. This forum is great!

It is about 1 1/2 hours approx. from Baddeck to Pleasant Bay. The drive isnt as bad as a roller coaster but a few twists and turns with a few mountain cliff elevated slopes as I like to call them. The views at these look offs are stunning. Be sure to have lots of batteries for your camera. Drive slow and stop if you want to look.
