Where to Stay for 1 night between Halifax and Louisberg

Hi All,

Just planning a trip for next summer late July-early August for 10-14days.

I understand that it is almost 5h drive between Halifax and Louisberg so I was thinking of splitting it up if we can and was wondering where would be a good place to stop. I'm thinking something scenic maybe with a beach where we could stretch our legs and just relax or maybe a small town with a few shops that would take an hour to walk through.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks in advance

You could stay in Antigonish - it's about 2 hours from Halifax on the way to Cape Breton, so it would be a good place to stop. It's a small town that has St. FX university and it is a beautiful area. The town is not right on the water but there are some nice beaches close by. My family used to vacation there in the summer when I was a kid and we always liked going to Pomquet Beach which is a 20 min drive from Antigonish.

Pictou would also be good and there are a couple wonderful Provincial Parks nearby. I like the beach at Caribou.

If you took Marine Drive along the Eastern shore instead of the highway you could either stop at Seawind Landing at Charlos Cove.

or DesBarres Manor Inn in Guysborough.

Although Marine Drive a little longer, if the weather is good great scenery you could also stop at Taylor Head Park.

In reading your inquiry, the first place that came to mind which "fits" your beach/small town request is Tatamagouche on the Northumberland Shore. There are beaches close by at both Brule & Malagash & the Northumberland Strait boasts the "warmest waters north of the Carolinas!". Take Exit # 14A off Hwy # 102 & follow to Rte # 311 which "ends" in Tatamagouche; about 2 hours from Halifax. Please check www.northumberlandshore.ca for interesting places to visit in this area.

I guess you've really got two reasonable routes. The 102 to 104 or Marine Drive.

I'm with post #3 on this and would pick Marine Drive. If you're planning on stopping midway then you can really take your time and enjoy the drive. You could stay in Sherbrooke overnight. There are a few restaurants, one gas station, one motel and a few B+B's in Sherbrooke.

Here is a map of places mentioned and the two routes....as you can see, Marine Drive hugs the coast.

Here are maps to clarify things. If you want to take two days I agree that the Marine Drive (Eastern Shore) is wonderful. You have several choices there too as you can go North from Sherbrooke or continue on along the shore. I would do the latter, and having stayed at Seawind Landing, can highly recommend it. If you want to get away from it all, have wonderful water view and great dining, this is the place. There is no shopping and the water is very cold for swimming, but there is a wonderful secluded beach.

However I live near Tatamagouche and Pictou and they have many great features as well. In Tatamagouche you can stay in an old caboose and eating in a dining car. Both have interesting shops and there are beaches along the shore.

THanks for all the help.

I think Marine Drive sounds awesome but I will let my husband make the final decision as he is the driver. I am trying to plan longer breaks for him as we did a driving tour of England and Wales recently and he was really sick of the driving by the end.

So I will see if he wants to go direct and spend 2 nights in Sydney/Louisberg area or scenic route and spend 1 night and 1 night.

Thanks again.

That is a difficult choice. How much time have you allotted for Cape Breton?
