3 Week trip in Fall 2018

WE are planning 3 weeks in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI in September or October.

We plan to fly into Halifax, rent a car and return to Halifax at the end of the trip.We want to take advantage of the fall colours, but still temperate weather and travel at a time that is less busy and possibly less expensive for accommodation. Also we are interested in festivals, concerts, beaching, kayaking, lovely drives, pubs with music, My questions are:

1. When would you recommend travelling. We are completely flexible in our dates.

2. Is it best to fly into and out of Halifax or better to do a car drop off in another city and fly home from there?

3. Has anyone travelled into Maine on a trip such as this and if so, was there one or two areas that interested you.

Thank you!

September to mid October Cape Breton will be going pretty strong due to Celtic Colours falling in October around your Thanksgiving weekend. The year we did Celtic Colours, the fall colors were just starting to pop out in spurts in spots. After we spent the week doing Celtic Colours we went over to PEI. Disclaimer: we did not stay in Charlottetown and PEI was pretty quiet for the most part, a lot of things were closed. So if you are an Anne of Green Gables fan, you may want to try and do your trip at the very beginning of September. We weren't interested in Anne stuff, so that made no difference to us. The colors were nice but it was hard to find places to eat. We went by 1 place for dinner since our bed and breakfast host had called the place before we left for the day and by the time we got there for dinner they had closed quite a bit earlier since they had no customers. September/October is a lovely time of year to visit but depending on exactly where you want to go be prepared for places not to be fully operational or completely shut down, especially PEI. Have only done New Brunswick once, it was early July and we only spent one night before taking morning ferry to Digby in Nova Scotia. Enjoy your trip and planning it!!!

Definitely consider flying in to Halifax and tour around before going to Cape Breton the second week of October.

I am away from my computer and files right now but gave a good look at the Top Questions to the right of this page. Check out the Trip Reports for lots of ideas.

With just three weeks I would not consider a side trip into Maine.

Once you have done a bit of reading come back with ideas of places you wish to visit. Our Trip Reports can really help you see what you can do with the amount of time you have and they can give you ideas of what interested other people.

If you want to go to PEI then be aware that the Cavendish area accommodations and restaurants will be closed. The Island (as we call PEI) is beautiful and worth at least a day to drive around the central area.

New Brunswick is famous for the Bay of Fundy National Park and Hopewell Rocks and for lovely beaches on the east coast. However you can also get your Bay of Fundy experience in Nova Scotia. Have a look at the Bay of Fundy link.

Also in Nova Scotia is the South Shore with Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg among other places. They will be busy year round. Also check out the Wolfville area and the Annapolis Valley.

You may have time to go further into southwest Nova Scotia and our South Shore and Annapolis Valley links have information for those areas.

Cape Breton is the highlight for most people and if you come during Celtic Colours it is simply amazing: fall colours, lively music, community suppers, arts and crafts, hiking, kayaking and stunning scenery. https://celtic-colours.com/ You will need to look for places to stay right away. Thank you for your posts. It is time for me to do more research on what we really want to see. Would going to PEI at the start of the trip mid to end of Sept. be doable? I really want to spend more than 1 day in PEI to bike or drive and walk the beaches. Hopefully there will still be some accommodation opportunities and restaurants still open.

hi

we went mid Sept. - Charlottetown was normal city life; stayed at the Delta with is central then did a day trip from there as it is only 40-km across to Cavendish. We were pretty much by ourselves on Cavendish Beach; it was not that cold but windy. photo taken on Cavendish Beach https://www.flickr.com/gp/cbaarch/v0A3Ym

there was a restaurant that we went to in North Rustico that was open but on a skeleton staff so you have to be patient. https://www.flickr.com/gp/cbaarch/0X096p
