Visiting Yellowknife end of January

I am planning to head out to Yellowknife over the weekend by the end of January with my brothers for a experience of the Northern lights....if possible.

We plan on getting there by Friday afternoon. then spend Friday night and Sat. night there and returning on Sunday back to Alberta.

1. Not sure what we should do there?

2. Can we see Northern Lights for sure? or we have to take our chances as someone told me that it depends on a clear sky and sun activities.

3. Other than trying to see Northern lights, we are thinking may be try out Dog Sledding and snowmobile.

4. Not sure if we should get a rental car or not.

6. Do we need to visit the A. village to see the light or we can do it ourselves to go to some where without city lights

What else we can do?

1. Browse http://ykonline.ca/

2. Aurora (regardless of what tourism guys say) is never a sure thing because of weather (both terrestial and space) Check http://ow.ly/VHME & http://ow.ly/VHPn & http://ow.ly/VHJT

3 Mushing is no problem but book in advance see Spectacular Northwest Territories http://ow.ly/VI0N tourism site

If you were here in March.. The 55th annual Diavik 150 Canadian Championship Dog Derby http://ow.ly/VHUV will be held March 27-29, 2009, starting at 1:00pm each day on Frame Lake, located behind City Hall in downtown Yellowknife.

4. Yes you can get a rental car easily (but not cheaply) in Yellowknife..

(No #5)

6 You can see the Aurora anywhere in town.. on the ice road between Yellowknife and the nearest village, Dettah (a 20 min trip) and along any of the other roads out of town (without city lights)

What else can you do/ Every weekend there are musical performances by good local bands/musicians all around town...

Also.. if you use Twitter, the Twitterati here in town use the #YZF hash-code when mentioning Yellowknife
