Hotel Info Please!!

Hi all, I am going to St. John's in August and would like to know if anyone has any experience/info on Hotel St. John's? I don't want to pay large fees but want to stay in a clean and friendly place. It needs to have at least a queen size bed and hopefully, with a view. Thanks for the help!

Hi,

Hotel St. Johns is certaionly a clean and friendly hotel and the restaurant PJ Billingtons is one of the best for food and service. Not much of a view though. It is located in a business area next to a shopping mall. You will find the best views downtown on the St. Johns waterfront which would be about 4-5 miles from your hotel. Are you staying long enough to leave the city and see some smaller Newfoundland outports? We have beautiful scenic out of the way places here. Enjoy!!

Thanks for your response and the great information. I am renting a car so will be taking some side trips. The only thing I have left to do is find a hotel. Do you or anyone else have any suggestions?

There are a few hotels I could reccomend.

One of them would not be Hotel St Johns and PJ Billingtons. It is infact as the above member underestimated the dreadfullness of the place. The food is good if you like greasy and fatty. The view is horrible, as it is located on Kenmount Road, the busiest stretch of Commercial bussinesses in the city, and soon to be connected by the Outer Ring Areterial (highway surrounding the city) . If you like a view of about 30,000 cars (litteraly) passing by every morning on the way to work, and every evening on the way back, and car salesmen out on one of the 20 car dealerships on the 10km stretch haggling with customers, and exhaust from cars, trucks, industrial vehicles etc, defintly go here. ALSO, there is a MAJOR construction site just up the road for this hotel. It is a new "First Pro" shopper center, the third one in the St. Johns area to pop up in the last 5 years or so.

First Stavanger Drive, far east, then Mount Pearl, and Now Kenmount RD. It is very noisy due to traffic congestion heading to the area, which includes big box stores such as WAL-MART, HOME DEPOT, and CANADIAN TIRE, and many many more to come. Also an offramp is being build from the city round highway also under construction in the area. Be prepared for a headache, bring lots of Tylonol.

The hotel itself isnt bad, infact its quite elegant, however the location is HORRENDOUS.

A nicer choice would be the downtown stretch, Water Street, Duckworth Street, New Gower, Harbour View Drive, etc. There are many B&B and Inn's in the Area, but your best choices of hotels would be:

Delta St John's Hotel and Conference Center.

260 rooms, undergoing a massive 200 room expansion currently, noise could be horrendous at day in this particular hotel. Located on New Gower Street, next to Mile One Stadium Recreation Complex home of the St. John's Maple Leafs, etc. Seats 8000 roaring fans, and the St Johns Convention Center, 30,000 sq feet of Prime Real Estate. Board Rooms, Ball Rooms, Dining Halls etc. Also located next to Cabot Building and Government of Canada building, two downtown high-rise commercial buldings.

Battery Hotel And Suites.

Great View, 125 rooms, located on top of Signal Hill, overlooking great views of the narrows, and harbor, and St. Johns Skyline. Food is 5 star, Service Exceptional. Great Hotel overall.

Quality Hotel.

Not as nice as other downtown hotels, but still exceptional. Restaurant is Rumplestiltskins, great food. Nice view of Harbor front.

Fairmont Newfoundland Hotel

Located up the road, close to all amentities (Duckworth, Water, etc). Great food, huge, best luxury hotel in the area.

HArbor View Inn.

Still Under Constructin. Finished this June.

Hope this information was helpful.

P.S. : About hotel costs, the extra you will pay on Delta, Farimont, etc is worth it. It will be hefty, depending on how much your willing to spend, but the amentities you requested and a view is available more in downtown hotels. Ofcourse though, for a higher price. It will prove to make your trip more enjoyable.

I also recommend staying downtown. We always choose the Fairmont, the Delta, or The Murray Premises. They are all a little bit more pricey, but the service, the views, and the quality is unbeatable at all of these hotels. Also some beautiful B&B's...try Waterford Manor, or anything along Waterford Bridge Road.
