I would suggest doing a whale/puffin tour from Bay Bulls, just 30 mins south of St. John's. There are several tours in this area (operators with large boats, like O'Brien's and Gatheralls (both offer shuttle service from St. John's to Bay Bulls for an extra charge) or those with smaller boats, like Mullowney's) These tours take you out around the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, a series of islands off the coast where thousands of seabirds and puffins nest. Here you will see whales and an abundance of sea birds. You can also do a tour directly from St. John's harbour, which will give you the chance to see the coastal scenery around St. John's, including Signal Hill and Cape Spear. Tours from Trinity are nice as well as they give you an opportunity to see the scenery in a different area of the province, but whale watching in July and early August is generally good regardless of the area you choose to take a tour from.
