Travel between St. John's and Gros Morne National Park

My husband and I are planning to arrive in St. John's May 16 and will depart from Deer Lake on May 22 or 23. Do you think six days is enough time to enjoy St. John's and surrounding area and drive up to Gros Morne and have time to enjoy that area too? Are we packing too much into six days?

We enjoy hiking (not too strenuous), hope to see some icebergs, would love to visit some interesting towns and villages along the way and enjoy some good local cuisine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on what you want to leave out! Seriously, you can't see St. John's, icebergs (unless there happens to be one right off St. John's harbour), interesting villages, Gros Morne, AND hike in six days.

If this is all the time you have, I'd suggest the 17th-18th in St. John's (assuming you won't arrive from Winnipeg until late on the 16th). If you're not interested in city walks/museum/churches etc,, you could take one of the days and do a boat tour from nearby Bay Bulls: there should be puffins by then.

Then on the 19th you could drive west, taking the "loop" from Gander up to Twillingate and back to Lewisporte, and spend the night there. The loop would give you a chance for some picturesque coastline and villages, and even icebergs if you're lucky.(The straight drive from St. John's to Gros Morne would be about 7 hours, and shows almost nothing that tourists come here to see).

Then you could drive on to Gros Morne and spend 2 nights in Rocky Harbour touring/hiking Gros Morne.

However, you'll spend a lot of time driving, out of 6 days.

Have a look at the tourist site:

Make sure you book a rental car.
