Downtown Questions?

I'll be in Winnipeg on business in a few weeks and am staying at the Fort Garry Hotel. What are some good places to eat within walking distance of the hotel? What I was hoping for is a good non-chain restaurant. I always like to sample some local places when I'm somewhere on business. I know that I can always get the same thing I eat at home if I go to a chain restaurant, but its nice to not eat that.

Any good local pizza places to order from that have delivery?

Is it safe to walk from the Fort Garry over to Shaw Park? I don't know Winnipeg at all and I know every city's downtown area has a sketchy part, so I'd rather not walk through it if it is bad. I wanted to pickup a Goldeyes hat while I was in town. It doesn't seem stupidly far to walk over to the ballpark. I understand there is a merchandise store that is open all year round. Since I will be there in a few weeks, I know that weather could be chilly (and the dreaded s word might be on the ground by then, if I say it I will jinx it) so walking might not be a good option. But weather dependant I'll see, otherwise I will have to cab it over.

Not that I plan to do much shopping, but does the Winnipeg Airport have a decent selection of Jets merchandise? My Dad has decided he likes the logo and I figured that I could pick him up a hat if the airport had a decent selection. I know I could head to the MTS Centre to get him one, but I don't believe that the store is open in the evenings on non-game days. The day I arrive I will likely have about an hour and a half to get to Shaw Park before the Goldeyes store closes and that is probably all the free time I'll have during the day.

What is the area like around the Fort Garry? I always find that hotel gift shops overprice their snacks, so one of the nights I am there, it is likely I'd wander to a convenience store. So I want to ensure that is a good idea to do that. I guess for that matter is there even one anywhere near the hotel?

Here is a link to info about restaurants in downtown Winnipeg. manitobacn.com/bbx/…2007_BIZ_Dining_Guide.pdf Right behind your hotel is Fort Garry Place Mall. There is a restaurant call Kelly which I found was very good. As you exit the Fort Garry turn left on Broadway and go down three streets to Donald Street. Look to your right and you will see Fredette Grocery store which does have a restaraunt also. I can also recommend Osar Deli's on Hargrave. There is lots of restaurants near the hotel.

The walk to Shaw park is a very easy and safe walk. Also quite close to your hotel is The Forks which in it self has restaurants, shops etc .

As for Pizza we order from Sorrento 774 9892.

Here is some information about the Jets store:

Authentic Team Store (MTS Centre)

Location: 300 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. Corner of Hargrave St and Portage Ave

Hours: Mon-Sat 10am to 6pm | Sun 12pm to 5pm

Phone: 204-926-5616

If you have any othere question please ask?

Welcome to Winnipeg!

Great advice from 'inthegarden'.

If you are in town over a weekend, the Sunday brunch at The Fort Garry Hotel is second to none. Here are some choices for non-chain downtown restaurants you may enjoy:

Bombolini (Italian) - www.amiciwpg.com/index.php…

Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse -http://www.ichiban.ca/

Shannon’s Irish Pub & Eatery -http://www.shannonsirishpub.ca/

Tavern United - http://www.tavernunited.com/

VJ’s Drive-In (Burgers & fries) - urbanspoon.com/r/…VJs-Drive-in-Winnipeg

Mitzi’s Chicken Fingers Restaurant (the best chicken fingers and chinese food) - urbanspoon.com/r/332/1461819/restaurant/Down…

East India Company - http://www.eastindiaco.com/

Lobby on York (Modern steakhouse)- http://www.lobbyonyork.com/

Hu’s On First Asian Bistro (At Shaw Park) - http://www.husasianbistro.ca/

The Fort Garry Hotel is also in close walking distance to The Forks. You may want to try:

Muddy Waters Smokehouse - wowhospitality.ca/restaurants/muddywaters.ht…

Sydney’s (fine dining)- www.sydneysattheforks.com/web/index.html

The Current (Gourmet with weekend live jazz) - innforks.com/dining-entertainment/index.cfm

Some great local pizza places (that deliver):

Gondola Pizza - http://www.gondola-pizza.com

Santa Lucia Pizza - http://www.santaluciapizza.com/

It is a safe and easy walk to Shaw Park. You should have no difficulties with it, but you should be prepared for cool weather. Taxi fare there and back would likely be $10-$15 at most.

The MTS Centre store is your best bet for Jets merchandise, although lately you’ll find it pretty much everywhere you go!

I haven’t seen it yet myself, but Winnipeg’s completely new airport terminal opens October 30th, and I’m sure there will be no problem finding Jets merchandise there. You may even find Goldeyes merchandise there too.

For downtown grocery shopping, you could try out The Forks Market, Fredette’s Family Foods at 120 Donald Street or The Bay Foodmart in the basement of The Bay downtown.

I hope these tips help. We’re happy to help with any other questions you may have.

I would definitely recommend checking out the Forks, lots of places to eat over there. Plus its not far from the Hotel Fort Garry at all.

As others have said Shaw Park is close and not the "sketchy" part of downtown Winnipeg, so you should be fine walking over there. But it is stil downtown and its a city, so just remeber to use common sense, crime can happen anywhere.

There was Jets merch. at the airport when I was last in Wpg. back in August (T -shirts, b-ball caps, sweasthirts, glasses, etc.), however if you want an actual jersey then I would suggest either going toeither MTS Centre or River City Sports.

Thanks for all the info. I'll definitely check out some of the recommendations over the next week.

Something I was curious about, what happened to all the Manitoba Moose merchandise? I know before the Jets moved to Winnipeg, the Moose had a team store at MTS Centre. Are they simply clearing out all the Moose merchandise there? I liked the logo of the Moose and was thinking if I can get a hat or t-shirt cheap, I'd do so.

You should still be able to get Moose stuff through River City Sports. There are a few locations in Winnipeg, the closest one to the Hotel Fort Garry is probably the St. James store.

Here's a link to their website: https://www.rivercitysports.com/US/ahl-06.cfm

Jets merchandise is a hot commodity these (always has been it seems...)

I was at the new YWG facility on opening day....had some time to check out the shops... Jets caps with the new logo were selling for $34 each (before tax) I just saw the dark blue ones.... they didn't seem to carry the white ones. The staff at the airport shop were just dusting themselves off Day 1 and unsure of what they truly had in stock or not (understandable)

.
