Bird watching in Vernon or Okanagan Valley

Hi. My husband and I are interested in bird watching and we'd like to find out more about bird watching opportunities in the Okanagan Valley.

Are there birding sites in the Valley? What kind of birds can be seen?

Should we stay in Kelowna or Vernon?

Thank you very much!

Vaseux lake just north of Oliver is a well known birding spot (as well as bighorn sheep). It's in the south Okanagan so Penticton may be a better base. You could also contact the South Okanagan Naturalist Club, maybe even join them for an outing.

The extensive use of pesticide in Okanagan orchards has hit local bird populations HARD, so much has been lost.

The road toward Lumby & Cherryville was the most productive spot I found in the Vernon area but we never spent enough time there to do it justice.

Last I was there we based ourselves in the south Okanagan-a small Provincial Park almost in Oliver-Inkaneep.

Bushy and buggy as it is there's all sorts of bird life quite unlike many other Okanagan Provincial Parks.

Slow driving the roads in the hills on either side of the valley also produced some great viewing, Vaseaux Lake was quite quiet birdwise when we were there-the roaring highway detracts from the whole experience IMO-some great swimming though.

And of coure there's always Tickleberry's

The south Okanagan is a popular destination because it is a unique habitat type in Canada. It's a proper desert - cacti and everything - and so you will get species there you don't see anywhere else in the country - birds and other wildlife.

The Federation of BC Naturalists:

has several affiliated clubs. I'm sure if you contacted one of the clubs and inquired, you would get specific answers to your questions. Where you go will depend on what you want to see, of course, and what species you are interested in. You'll find some fellow twitchers in the Naturalist Clubs that will be able to give you ideas about what you can see where. That should help you narrow down where to base yourselves for your trip.
