Victoria and nightlife are not commonly found in the same sentence. I'd stay right downtown...close to the harbour.

As for nightlife, I would say that the Strathcona Hotel would be a good start. There are numerous bars / clubs there.

I am sure that others will weigh in...

It will be pretty quiet in Victoria at this time of year. Government Street will have some shopping, as will the Bay higher up on Government. Opening hours will be until 5 pm, maybe 6, but not on NYE when they will close closer to 4 or earlier.

Hmmm, yes, the title of this one caught my eye. I don't think I've ever seen anyone ask about nightlife in Victoria. Its certainly not known for that. However, it does have a university, so if there are university students, there has to be some nightlife, doesn't there?

hmmmmm nightlife/Victoria. I guess the best advice would be as mentioned. Downtown. Dating myself here but the Old Forge in the Strathcona used to be where all the action was. I don't even know if it still exists...sigh

If you do venture into Big Bad John's (Strathcona Hotel), make sure you wear some shoes with decent tread. Yes, there really are peanut shells all over the floor!

Places like Darcy's Pub, Ferris Oyster Bar, or the Canoe Club are popular with the younger crowd. The Irish TImes, or Bard and Banker with the not quite so young crowd. The Strathcona is the larget night club complex in the city, with several different areas to choose from. The Empress is the place for a not young but more classic (and expensive) New Year's experience. These are all in a central area, so walking is no problem. Be aware that most places now insist on booking ahead for New Years's Eve events.

There are many hotels in the downtown area, from the upscale (such as the Empress, Mariott, or Delta Point) to the more modest (such as the Royal Scott, Carlton Plaza, or Best Western Inner Harbour). The Rialto (just received a major facelift) or the Bedford Regency are dead center of town.

Here are a couple of sites with NY's listings:

Echo virtualtrek's comments however you should also consider the Magnolia Hotel. Close to all things noted in other posts and a nice property to boot!

Chateau Victoria - next street over from the Strathcona - close to the inner harbour- shopping - parking included. They have suites for sharing - cheaper than a couple of rooms. If you stay there try Clives lounge for very good cocktails.

Strathcona gets busy on the weekends - we always see lots of young people lined up to get in. Big Bad John's is a hoot to visit as well.

I never heard nightlife and victoria in one sentence before! I agree, Strathcona is a good choice.
