Six day Tofino itinerary with children

We plan to arrive on June 27th from Nanaimo in a rental car. Family of four w/ girls 7 and 9.

We will be staying at Pacific Sands.

Looking for advice on how best to spend our time in Tofino, leaving lots of time for just walking and beachcombing of course.

Restaurant tips are also welcome!

You can easily and should spend at least one day in Ucluelet. It a 25-30 min drive.

In Ucluelet there is the wild pacific trail http://www.wildpacifictrail.com/ No need to do a loop just walk for 10-15 min in one direction then come back. There is a parking lot at the lighthouse good place to start. Then for the Big Beach loop starting by the school and just past the Black Rock Inn (as far as the new subdivision) has got lots of interesting features like wood bridges; access to the beach; good spots for watching the waves crash on the rocks. (see tide table link)

+ the harbour and aquarium area in Ucluelet is good for a stroll. Try to spot sea lions or seals by the docks. and always on the look out for eagles.

this is the tide tables so you can time your beach walks for bigger waves. www.dairiki.org/tides/monthly.php/tof/2014-02

another link for info uclueletwildpacific.com/uclueletbeachesuclue…

for food http://redcangourmet.com/ and http://www.wildsidegrill.com/

and a note: The park passes are good until 4pm the next day; you may only need 4 days of passes if you plan it right, since activities in Tofino and Ucluelet do not require a pass.

Ucluelet Aquarium is worth a visit: http://www.uclueletaquarium.org/

And be aware of some attractions on the way to/from Pac Rim NP.

We were there for four days when our kids were 8 & 10. I can tell you what we did.

We had a day inside the national park. We went up to Telegraph Hill, which was a bit disappointing because the trees are growing up all around the old site, obscuring most of the views the area used to be famous for. We walked the rainforest trail, I can't recall if it was A or B, but the one on the same side as the ocean was closed when we were there, so we did the one on the other side of the highway and I thought it was magnificent! Much better than Cathedral Grove, IMO, and we visited the Kwisitis Visitor Centre at Wickannish Beach, which took up the entire afternoon, especially after someone pointed out the humpback or grey whales out on the ocean.

We had a day down at Uclulet. We walked around the Lighthouse loop on the Wild Pacific Trail. My advice is to do it in a counterclockwise direction in order to avoid a rather significant climb back to the parking lot. But its a really lovely trail and a walk well worth doing.

We had a day in Tofino, wandering around the shops and then we went down to Tonquin Beach (probably one of the only beaches you can access without a NP pass. I really liked this beach, its sheltered and warm. Be warned there is no washroom down there and none at the trail head either.

Our last day was a day lounging on Long Beach. We had balls and frisbees and kites, we took a cooler full of food and deck chairs. The weather wasn't ideal, but we just bundled up in sweaters and enjoyed it all the same. We watched the surfers and took a very long walk down the beach. The kids built driftwood forts while DH and I sat in our chairs and dozed or read books. Lovely trip.
