Help with planning June 2 week trip

My husband and I, 2 seniors interested in photography, nature, history, culture, are planning to spend 2 weeks on Vancouver Island. Initial plans include a short stop in Vancouver to visit with friends taking the ferry to Victoria, maybe 2-3 days there, then renting a car and exploring the island

Any suggestions as to places to visit, length of stay in each, places to rent (B&B, cottage, etc.), will be very welcome. Thank you in advance,

No trip to Vancouver Island would be complete without 3-4 days in the Pacific Rim National Park region.

Hi

I would rent a car in Vancouver rather than Victoria; basic reason is that unless you have someone to drop you off at the ferry terminal you are adding about $60 total to the cost of your trip for the cost of taking the car on the ferry. if you have to take the PCL bus or transit even less. Swartz Bay to downtown Victoria is 30 km. so it not as if you are getting of the ferry at your initial destination. +you go past Butchart Gardens so with a car you can visit there first before going into victoiria; then you do not have to backtrack because the next part of the trip going north does not go past the gardens and you would be taking the next ferry in Nanaimo.

So a suggested scenario

Ferry-Gardens-victoria night 1

Victoria nights 2-3

Duncan-Chemanus-Ladysmith-Nanaimo night 4

via#17 Courtney-Comox night 5

Cathedrals Grove- Port Alberni-Ucluelet or Tofino night 6

Ucluelet or Tofino night 7-8-9

from Tofino boat tour to see whales and maybe bear if in the correct season

Tofino or Ucluelet to Nanaimo via Coombs to get the Horseshoe Bay ferry (Vancouver) night 10

that gives you at least 2 days in Vancouver to visit with friends

Completely agree that you have to work around Pacific Rim/Tofino area. It checks all your boxes.

If it works, I would also try to get to Telegraph Cove and Alert Bay if you possibly can.

Thanks, cbaarch. I am going to print your reply and start looking at maps. If you have also some recommendations for B&B, they would be accepted with gratitude. Another question: For the Tofino, etc. area, does it make sense to stay put for the 3-4 days and drive around from there? If yes, what would you recommend as a central stay-put place?

What time of year are you coming? Pacific Rim National Park on the west coast of Vancouver Island (about 3 1/2 hours across Vancouver Island at mid-point) is very popular, both among BC residents and visitors, and can book up very quickly during peak months. Also, it can be quite expensive, depending on the time of year. Have a look at Tourism Tofino for ideas about accommodation -

However, there are lots of photographic opportunities with wonderful rain forest and ocean beaches.

We visited Telegraph Cove on northern Vancouver Island (east side) last fall and stayed a bit further north in Port McNeill at -

The ferry to Alert Bay leaves from Port McNeill and it is about 20 minutes by car to Telegraph Cove (with its really interesting "boardwalk" with histories of the buildings and also a whale interpretative museum).

Edit - Pacific Rim is a destination itself and not a good place from which to visit the rest of Vancouver Island. You drive over, spend a few days, and then drive on.

"drive on" - could not further edit - should be "drive back". The main highway runs up and down the east side of Vancouver Island and you drive over to Pacific Rim from there. There are no roads up and down the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Thank you itchyfeet,

More good advice. We will arrive there probably June 18 and have, as I mentioned, 2 weeks. I think this should be a good time of the year, but probably also a busy time.
