A little landmark has gone

Olympia Fish Market (also a fine fish and chip shop), is no more.

Back in the 1970s, Olympia was a tiny shop next to Galloway's on Robson Street, just east of Thurlow Street. Galloway's was a swell place selling bulk food and treats from all over the world, and Olympia had beautiful fresh fish in the window, a tiny kitchen and a few places to stand at a counter and eat.

With the redevelopment of Robson Street, Galloway's moved to Davie Street (second shop in Pacific Centre), then Denman Street, then moved out of the West End entirely, as rents became too high. Olympia moved around the corner to Thurlow Street, and as time went by focused more on frying and grilling fresh fish, rather than as a wet fish shop.

The 'For Lease' sign appeared in the Olympia window a few months ago, and now the store has closed - the windows are covered and it's no longer trading. A firm favourite of West Enders, and a place I've never hesitated to suggest to visitors, but no longer. It will be missed.

What a shame. We walked by there in late July and had we not just eaten we would have gone in. A missed last opportunity as we have not been back to Vancouver since.

Where is the new Galloway's location? We wondered what had happened to them?

Galloways is now located in New Westminster. I used to shop at the Davie location and was pleasantly surprised upon moving to NW to find it out here!

"Galloways is now located in New Westminster."

On 6'th Ave, just a short block+ down from the corner of 6'th Ave and 6'th St - almost across the street from a side entrance to the Royal City Centre Mall (Food Court entrance) and the Safeway supermarket.

It still has it's great selections of 'goodies' and those wonderful aromas!! Just wish Murchies Tea was located there too!! I used to love going into both places when they were near each other on Robson St in Vancouver (course, that was many moons ago now).
