Olympia Fish Market (also a fine fish and chip shop), is no more.
Back in the 1970s, Olympia was a tiny shop next to Galloway's on Robson Street, just east of Thurlow Street. Galloway's was a swell place selling bulk food and treats from all over the world, and Olympia had beautiful fresh fish in the window, a tiny kitchen and a few places to stand at a counter and eat.
With the redevelopment of Robson Street, Galloway's moved to Davie Street (second shop in Pacific Centre), then Denman Street, then moved out of the West End entirely, as rents became too high. Olympia moved around the corner to Thurlow Street, and as time went by focused more on frying and grilling fresh fish, rather than as a wet fish shop.
The 'For Lease' sign appeared in the Olympia window a few months ago, and now the store has closed - the windows are covered and it's no longer trading. A firm favourite of West Enders, and a place I've never hesitated to suggest to visitors, but no longer. It will be missed.
