Best sushi in Vancouver?

There are a couple of dining threads going right now, and I am following them and taking notes, but in both cases the OP isn't interested in sushi. Sushi is our primary interest, so I'm starting another one. My husband and I will be in town for three nights (Saturday - Monday) in September, staying at L'Hermitage, and getting around via public transportation. Price isn't a huge concern. We're willing to spend up to $350 for outstanding food and a better than average dining experience, and we really enjoy omakase and tasting menus.

Thanks, bill_n_0pus. I'm familiar with Chowhound and use it, but the locals here seem to give really good dining recommendations, too, so I wanted to get their take the sushi scene.

I've never had great luck at Tojo's. Not sure there is a best. Personally I really like Kingyo'son Denman Street but it is more an izakaya and no where near your upper end limit.

Maybe take my suggestion with a grain of shio. When I lived in Japan I ate at some super famous, awesome restaurants and always preferred the little hole in the walls, like under the train tracks at Tokyo Station, over them.

SamSalmon always has some good suggestions.

For small, intimate neighbourly places, I really like Kishimoto on Commercial Drive:

In Yaletown, I like Kaide: http://www.vancouverkaidesushi.com/

Both these places aren't fancy at all, but have top quality food and are completely affordable, even by Vancouver standards.

Other foodies in Vancouver swear by Toshi just off Main Street (I've never been).

Tojo's (I've never been) is $$$$$$$$, which is why it's a once-in-a-special occasion kind of restaurant. Their sushi chef is also a bit of a local celebrity chef. The omokase is legendary, but again, you're paying 200x the price we normally spend on sushi in this city. There's better value to be had, most people argue, because you don't have to pay that much to get excellent sushi around here: http://www.tojos.com/

Finally, for an upper scale place, Minami in Yaletown is excellent. Not as pricy as Tojo's, but a higher end experience than the first three I mentioned. http://minamirestaurant.com/

If you have the time, give the Yelp reviews a skim (Vancouver has a huge Yelp community) just to see what locals are saying about the places, then look at their websites (if they even exist) to see the menus.

Not Tojo's-a classic tourist trap.

Try this place instead http://www.octopusgardensada.com/

Toshi is really good. Not fancy food, but good, soild food.

The restaurant is small and very popular, so if you go, try to avoid dinner rush hours.

I'd like to get to Toshi one day. Octopus' Garden, as Sam suggested, is great. I need to go back there. So many good sushi options!
