Vancouver to Jasper via Whistleer

Looking for place to stop for night about 4 hrs out of Whistler, any one got advice on that.

Also if you had to miss either Banff or Jasper from your trip which would it be?

Thanks

Rettie

Jasper only gets 1/3 of the visitors that Banff does so some people miss it. By driving up the icefield Pkwy as far as Athabasca Glacier you will get a majority of the highlights.

Whistler to 100 Mile House shows up on Google as almost exactly 4 hours.

From there, you back track slightly to the Little Fort turn off to cut across to Highway 5.

There may be something along Highway 24, near Sheriden Lake or Bridge Lake. This is a very pretty area, so worth looking into.

Actually, David, Jasper National Park gets about half the visitors that Banff National Park does - Jasper is edging up to 2 million per year, and Banff gets close to 4 million.

henretr, it would be good to know the rest of your itinerary... where are you going after the Canadian Rockies? Both national parks are beautiful; it would be a shame if you have to miss one. Jasper National Park is almost twice the size of Banff NP and includes the Columbia Icefields and Athabasca Glacier (as well as many other scenic attractions), but Banff has Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. Banff is a bustling town of about 8,000; the town of Jasper is about 4500 ... some people love the shopping, dining and other amenities in Banff; others find it too busy and prefer Jasper, which is quieter, but still has plenty of services for visitors. (Tourism is the main industry of both towns.)

I would definitely miss Whistler in favour the far greater beauty of both Jasper and Banff.

Hi, I didn't realise I was signed in under my Facebook sign on.

Had posted before re itinerary under my usual postings as Rettie

Whistler won't be an overnight stop, just my husband would like to drive the Sea to Sky Highway & get a wee taste of Whistler.

We have 6 nights after our cruise to do a bit of site seeing & hope to fly home from Calgary.

The question re Jasper v Banff is incase we need to return to Vancouver to fly home. We would still like to see the Canadian Rockies, we visited the American ones a couple of years ago when we roadtrip.

Hi rettie ~

We generally recommend about 8-10 nights to make a one way journey across the province to Calgary.

2-4 nights Vancouver. Whistler takes 2 hours one way to drive and can be easily done with a 3 hour visit there for a 7+ hour day.

1 night somewhere on the way across the province, perhaps Kelowna or if necessary, Kamloops

2-3 nights Banff/Lake Louise

2-3 nights Jasper

1 final night in Banff to prepare for the 2 hour drive to the airport.

You would just need to tweak those nights down to fit your 6 nights. Perhaps just include Banff with Lake Louise and a day trip half way up the Icefields Parkway and back.

Hi Mufti

We will have been in Vancouver for 3 nights prior to cruise.

I had thought one night Kamloops on way to Jasper for 2 nights, then 2 nighs Banff but hubbie says could we drive to Jasper via Whistler so he can drive the highway so needed overnight stop recommendations should we decide to do this.

If we are flying back from Vancouver, it would be something totally different or just persuade him to forget about the Sea to Sky & Whistler & go over to Banff which would mean nice route with over night stop, 3 nights Banff & one night on way back somewhere about 8 hrs with driving \& stops, our flight if leaving from Vancouver won't be until late in the day.

Oh heck just realised gave wrong number of nights it might only be 5!

Do wish we had more days to add but not able to this year. This is just to be a wee taster trip to the Rockies.

Aha! the truth comes out. :-))

You could:

Vancouver - Cache Creek. 5 h, stops extra. Spend 3-4 hours in Whistler for a full day. 1 night Cache Creek.

Cache Creek - Revelstoke. 3.5 h, stops extra. 1 night Revelstoke

Revelstoke - Banff. 3.5 h, stops extra. 3 nights. Day trip to Jasper or visit on the way to Banff.

You could:

Vancouver - Clearwater. 7 h, stops extra. Spend time in Whistler. 1 night Clearwater.

Clearwater - Jasper. 4 h, stops extra. 2 nights

Jasper - Banff. All day.

Banff - Calgary International. 2 h. 2 nights.

I do not generally recommend Kamloops.

These are driving time. You can tweak them or combine legs, just know that any stops would be on top of these times. General consensus on the forums is that Hwy 1 to Banff is more scenic than Hwy 5 to Jasper.
