ferry from Vancouver to Victoria

Is it necessary to make a reservation for the ferry ride w/ car on April 29?

We will be renting a car in Seattle and driving to Vancouver and then on to Victoria. Is there any problem crossing the boarder with a rental car?

Thanks!!

While it is not necessary to make a reservation, I would highly recommend that you do with BC ferry on their website, (please READ the rules as well)...b/c April 29 is on a Saturday....and it could be busy.......waiting an hour or more in line for a ferry is a massive waste of your valualbe vacation time....it won't be any fun if you arrive in Victoria in the afternoon, and lost half a day of sight seeing.

Rental car, sorry can't help you...you might want to call your car rental place and ask them.

After just missing the ferry several times we now reserve always. (Unless it is the middle of the day in the middle of the week in the middle of the winter)

The way we look at it is - $15 for reservation OR if you have to wait you will spend at least $15 for food and magazines etc at the ferry terminal. For 2 people, two magazines and two bottles of pop/juice is more than $15. Just make sure that you can be there for the ferry you reserve a half hour before hand or your reservation is cancelled without a refund.

Have you also considered the Washington State Ferry from Anacortes to Victoria? Very scenic but will take longer and you should make reservations (see www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries)

You will need to notify your rental car company that you are crossing the border.

RE: Washington State Ferry...Anacortes

No I really didn't consider it because I think it better to go the fastest way to Victoria from Vancouver because the next day we are traveling from Victoria to Port Angeles. So as it is we have little time in Victoria. When we arrive in Victoria we plan on taking the scenic route down to downtown near the port for travel next day.

Victoria via Vancouver will be faster and more flexible with more ferry sailings, the Anacortes - Victoria route is once a day and can be time consuming but very scenic.

Apr. 29th doesn't seem to be a "special" weekend, that would result in all-full ferries - so, likely you could reserve just a day or two in advance.

That being said, won't hurt to double-check on Tues. then Wed. then Thurs. to be sure :-), and make your reservation accordingly (maybe Friday?). Just don't reserve until you are *sure* of your plans ... because there is no refund on the $15. reserve fee.

Here's BCFerry's info page - with the "Check Space Availability" link on left side -
