It's generally a 5-6 hour drive between Vancouver and Kelowna... so you're right, too long to drive just "for lunch". If you were considering flying, WestJet has services between Vancouver and Kelowna.

It is a 4 hour drive to Kelowna from Vancouver over the Coquihalla (#5) Hwy, as long as the weather cooperates. There is a $10 toll each way. You don't mention what time of year you will be travelling. If it's winter, and you hit a storm, it could be 8 hours, and not much fun.

In addition to West Jet, Air Canada also flies from Vancouver to Kelowna. Return flights, booked minimum 3 weeks in advance, usually run $200-300. You could also try flying from Abbotsford (1 hour east of Vancouver) to see if this reduces costs. WJ & AC both operate out of Abbotsford also.
