canada to vancouver

Hi everyone we are travelling to canada in June and are hiring a car in calgary and heading to vancouver . we have 11 days to get to vancouver before we pick up our cruise .what would be the best route to take so we dont miss too much of interest, and is there a Hertz depot near the port, Also can anyone recommend any hotels on the way for about £50 - £100 per night.Thanks

According to Hertz's website, if you drop off a car at their 1128 Seymour Street location, they give you a free taxi ride to the pier. It would be a good thing to e-mail them and get confirmation of that.

What does 11 days mean? Is Day #1 the day you land in Calgary and Day #11 the day you catch your cruise? Or do you have 11 full days between Calgary and the cruise, not counting the day you land and the day your catch your cruise?

I'll try and read your mind. Here are a couple of itineraries:

1 - Land in Calgary, drive to Banff.

2, 3 - Banff

4, 5 - Jasper

6 - Clearwater or Kamloops

7, 8 - Whistler

9, 10, 11 (or however many days you have) - Vancouver

12 - Catch cruise

1 - Land in Calgary, drive to Banff.

2, 3 - Banff

4, 5 - Jasper

6 - Revelstoke

7, 8 - Okanagan Valley (Penticton or some other town)

9, 10, 11 (or however many days you have) - Vancouver

12 - Catch cruise

The route through Whistler is a quieter route that goes through more wilderness. The Okanagan Valley is a relatively arid, fruit-growing, wine-producing region with lots of vacation resorts along its pleasant lakes.

It's hard to know which hotels to recommend until you settle on a route. Also, since you'll be travelling through Canada, it would help folks here if you expressed your hotel budget in Canadian dollars. FYI, at today's exchange rate, £50 - £100 is about 115 CAD - 230 CAD.

I'll address the matter of accommodation in Banff and Jasper, since you'll most likely stay in those two places regardless of where you go after that.

In the Canadian Rockies you won't find even moderate accommodation at the low end of your range. Moderate accommodation in Banff costs 170 CAD and up. Superior accommodation costs 200 CAD and up. Luxury accommodation costs 400 CAD and up. Hotels in the superior range (better than moderate, but not luxurious) include:

* Banff Caribou Lodge

* Banff Ptarmigan Inn

* Delta Banff Royal Canadian Lodge

* Buffalo Mountain Lodge

* Banff Park Lodge

In the Jasper area you might consider the chalet-style properties just outside of town, for example:

* Alpine Village

* Becker's Chalets

* Jasper House Bungalows

* Patricia Lake Bungalows

* Pyramid Lake Resort

Also check out Park Place Inn, which is located in Jasper townsite.

Hope that helps.
